Job Description - Program Director for Respiratory Care

Occupational Summary:

The Program Director (PD) must provide effective leadership for the program, including, but not limited to, responsibility for communication, ongoing program planning and assessment, and fiscal management.  The PD’s administrative responsibilities include: fiscal planning; program planning and development; ongoing review and analysis of all program activities; ensuring that, in all aspects, the program meets the requirements of the Entry into Practice Standards as set forth by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).  Educational responsibilities include continuous curriculum development and review as well as teaching.  The PD must work with the Director of Clinical Education (DCE) to ensure that clinical education for program students is coordinated with didactic and laboratory activities and is sufficient to meet program outcomes required by the Standards.

Faculty rank will be commensurate with qualifications.  The Program Director is a full-time faculty position and is eligible for tenure review.

Work Performed:

  1. The Program Director shall be responsible for all aspects of the program, including the organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development, and general effectiveness of the program.
  2. The Program Director shall participate in program planning and evaluation of instruction for all aspects of respiratory therapy in cooperation and collaboration with the Medical Director and the Director of Clinical Education.
  3. The Program Director shall actively participate in the instruction of students.
  4. In support of the Director of Clinical Education, the Program Director shall ensure that the Medical Directors of the affiliated respiratory therapy departments provide adequate medical input in all phases of clinical education.
  5. In consultation with the Newman University Director of the School of Nursing and Allied Health, the Program Director shall:
    1. Provide student advising regarding all aspects of the Respiratory Care Program, including student counseling.
    2. Provide didactic, laboratory, and clinical course content, instruction, and instructors to meet student, university, and professional needs.
    3. Advise Medical Director and Advisory Committee regarding direction and operation of the program.
    4. Assist School Director in recruitment, hiring, and evaluation of respiratory care faculty.
    5. Seek support for program update, expansion, or other changes needed to better meet student, university, professional, credentialing, and accreditation standards and requirements.
    6. Abide by Faculty Responsibilities as outlined in the Newman University Faculty Manual.
  6. The Program Director will:
    1. Promote the respiratory program’s mission and goals.
    2. Demonstrate support of the university’s mission in daily work performance and interactions with staff and students.
    3. Maintain required student and faculty records.
    4. Maintain required continuing education.
    5. Provide guidance and input on hiring of faculty.
    1. Other duties, as assigned.
Required Qualifications/Education/Experience/Skills/Training:
  1. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with valid credentials.
  2. Licensed in the State of Kansas.
  3. Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree (for associate degree programs) from an academic institution accredited by an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the US Department of Education.  The PD must have a master’s degree if the offered program is at the bachelor’s or master’s degree level.
  4. Recognized qualifications by training and experience in the management of respiratory diseases and in respiratory therapy procedures are required.
  5. Have a minimum of four years’ experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist with at least two years in clinical respiratory care.
  6. Have a minimum of two years’ experience teaching either as an appointed faculty member in a CoARC-accredited respiratory care program or as a clinical instructor/preceptor for students of such a program.
  7. Have or will receive soon after employment CoARC Key Personnel Training Program certificate of completion.
  8. Member of representative professional organizations.
  9. Responsible, self-motivated with strong communication skills.
  10. Legally authorized to work in the United States of America.
