Job Description - Program Director/Instructor Practical Nursing

We are seeking an enthusiastic professional Program Director/Instructor of Practical Nursing who is passionate about cultivating the school’s mission and objectives through student instruction, guidance and review in order to ensure successful development of each student.


 


Because of our commitment to community, employment preference is given to residents who live in WV and the New River Community Technical College service area of Braxton, Fayette, Greenbrier, Mercer, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Raleigh, and Summers, West Virginia counties.


 


The individual in this position will have the flexibility to choose anyone of our campus locations (Raleigh County Campus, Greenbrier County Campus, Nicholas County Campus or Mercer County Campus) as their primary work location.  This position reports directly to the Dean of Allied Health, Nursing and Natural Science. The position will work collaboratively with management, faculty and staff within the department and college to serve the best interests of the students.


 


This role is a full-time, exempt, position and serves at the will and pleasure of the College President.

Job Summary


The Director of the Practical Nursing serves as the academic leader and manages the administrative functions of the PN Program.   


Nature of Work


This position is not expected to carry a teaching load equal to other faculty allowing adequate time to carry out activities related to the coordination of the practical nursing program.  Some teaching is required. 


Distinguishing Characteristics


Duties include but are not limited to the following:



  • assume responsibility for organizing and directing the program under the jurisdiction of the sponsoring agency;

  • developing/reviewing curriculum including ensuring the establishment of effective student learning outcomes and related assessment methods;

  • maintain compliance of state and national accreditation standards required for the ongoing accreditation of the nursing program;

  • developing class schedules and faculty assignments in coordination with the dean and faculty;

  • identifying/promoting professional development for self, faculty, and staff

  • maintaining knowledge of current industry standards by developing relationships with industry leaders, experts, and companies; continuously evaluating national, regional, and local workforce trends in Nursing

  • seek recommendations from the practical nursing advisory committee for establishing policies for the recruitment, selection, admission, progression, dismissal and counseling of students;

  • schedule regular faculty conferences and maintain a written record of discussions and decisions;

  • establish a system to maintain essential records that will be used to evaluate student progress while the student is enrolled in the program and to follow-up on the student after his or her graduation;

  • report, at least monthly, the status of the program to the sponsoring agency administrator and to the advisory committee as necessary;

  • visit clinical practice areas regularly to evaluate student experience and maintain communications with facility administration and staff;

  • plan and implement an annual budget for the program;

  • make recommendations for faculty appointments;

  • arrange for activities for selecting students including testing and interviewing;

  • interpret changing practices in the utilization of the graduate practical nurse and adjust the educational program to accommodate these changes;

  • develop short and long range objectives and strategies for strengthening the program;

  • establish criteria for the ongoing evaluation of the curriculum, the clinical facilities and the faculty;

  • and, either individually or in collaboration with the administrator of the sponsoring agency, evaluate and document, at least yearly, instructor's performance in terms of personal and professional achievement

  • evaluation and documentation of a new instructor’s performance in the clinical area shall be completed by the program director at least every 6 months

  • The Director of Practical Nursing is not expected to carry a teaching load equal to other faculty, allowing for adequate time to conduct activities related to coordination of the nursing program. 


Position requires the ability to travel.


 


Professional Development


·         Compliance training is to be completed routinely and timely and as directed by the Director of Practical Nursing.


·         Participate in additional professional development opportunities through professional organization affiliations.


·         Maintains 15 hours of continuing education each year pursuant to the legislative rules of the West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses.


·         Maintain membership in professional nursing organizations.


Qualifications

Skills/Abilities



  • Registered Nurse currently licensed in West Virginia.

  • Have experience as a registered professional nurse within 3 years immediately preceding employment as a (full or part-time) faculty member.

  • Have or be enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program, preferably in nursing, with completion within 5-7 years of date of hire as demonstrated by submission of transcripts to the program coordinator.


Have 3 years of experience as a registered professional nurse which should include: 2 years of patient side nursing care experience in an acute, intermediate or long-term care clinical facility; and 1-year experience in one or more of the following areas: teaching supervision or administration: and, present evidence of continuing education.



Education level


Associate Degree in Nursing, Preferred


Bachelors Degree in Nursing, Required


Master's Degree in Nursing, Preferred



Experience


In addition to the knowledge/education, the following related work experience is typically required for this position.  An equivalent combination of education and recent, related experience may be acceptable.  Accreditation standards must be met.



Experience as a registered professional nurse within 3 years immediately preceding employment is required.


3 Years of experience as a registered professional nurse which should include: 2 years of patience side nursing experience in an acute, intermediate or long-term care clinical facility; and 1-year experience in one or more of the following areas: teaching supervision or administration; and, present evidence of continuing education. 



License or Certification


Valid Drivers License is Required


Unencumbered West Virginia Registered Nurse License is Required
