Overview
The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers is an internationally renowned fellowship program open to people whose work will benefit directly from access to the collections at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building—including academics, independent scholars, and creative writers. The Center appoints 15 Fellows each year for a nine-month term at the Library, from September through May. In addition to working on their own projects, the Fellows engage in ongoing exchanges of ideas within the Center and in public forums throughout the Library.

Under the supervision of the Deputy Director of the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers, the Program Manager curates, develops, manages, and executes all aspects of CSW public programs; stands in for the Director in his absence during public programs; creates Cullman Center social media content and manages all Center social media presence; recruits interlocutors; strategizes outreach and develops relationships with other cultural institutions to ensure robust audiences for public events; collaborates with Public Relations and Public Programming Departments; assists with aspects of fellowship competition; helps coordinate CSW Institute for Teachers; and manages Center’s practical daily office needs.

  • Coordination of Cullman Center practices with other departments at the Library 
  • NYPL catalog to assist Fellows with their daily research needs

  • Public awareness of Fellows’ books 
  • Growth in institutional outreach
Some expectations for this role are that within:

1 month, this person will:
  • Have met and developed relationships with colleagues elsewhere in the Library working in parallel and complementary roles 
3 months, this person will:
  • Have familiarized themselves with past Fellows and their works-in-progress
6 months and beyond, this person will:
  • Be able to assist Fellows with specific research needs 
Responsibilities
  • Curate, develop, manage, and execute 8–12 public evening programs per year, coordinating with Public Programming, Public Relations, and Library Shop to ensure quality events and avoid scheduling conflicts
  • Create partnerships and co-hosting opportunities with other New York City cultural institutions, authors, and publishers; develop and organize post-event activities; work to attract media attention to CSW events and people
  • Create content for CSW social media, posting about Fellows and events, monitoring activities of current and former Fellows’ publications, awards, and readings; notify other NYPL departments of important CSW news; create CSW content for NYPL blog
  • Manage daily administration of CSW: ordering supplies and meals, performing office upkeep, and providing general administrative support 
  • Maintain CSW records, library of Fellows’ publications, and lists of Fellows’ accolades
  • Assist Deputy Director in organizing and planning seminars for high school and middle school teachers in the Cullman Center Institute for Teachers
  • Strategize and execute plans to bring public attention to Cullman Center at large
  • Monitor budget operations throughout the year and work with Deputy Directory to assist in preparing budget for the upcoming fiscal year 
  • Perform other job-related duties as necessary

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Bachelor's degree in Arts or Humanities 
Required Experience
3+ years of relevant work experience
