Position Summary:
The Program Support Specialist plays a critical hands-on role in ensuring the smooth daily operations of both the cultural workshops and food service areas at the Yakutat Tlingit Tribe’s Culture Camp. This position supports instructors and artists during activities, assists with meal service and cookhouse maintenance, and helps coordinate transitions between sessions, meals, and special events.
This role requires flexibility, a strong team-oriented attitude, and the ability to anticipate and meet the evolving needs of both the program and kitchen teams throughout the day. The Specialist is an essential connector between different parts of camp life, helping create a safe, supportive, and well-organized environment for campers and staff alike.
Essential Functions:
- Assist workshop instructors with hands-on activity support, material preparation, and participant engagement.
- Support the cookhouse team by helping with food prep, serving meals, clean-up, and kitchen organization.
- Ensure safe and smooth transitions between program activities and meal times, including helping gather and redirect campers.
- Help maintain cleanliness of program and cookhouse spaces throughout the day.
- Assist with set-up and breakdown of indoor and outdoor activity areas as needed.
- Monitor camper safety and well-being during program and meal times, reporting concerns to supervisors promptly.
- Participate in Culture Camp planning meetings, daily team briefings, and end-of-camp clean-up.
- Uphold Tribal cultural values by fostering respect, kindness, and teamwork in all camp spaces.
- Participate in set-up before camp begins, daily and final clean-up at the end of camp.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Working with Tribal programs, education programs, or youth programs is preferred.
- Safety protocols and kitchen hygiene standards and ability to follow them.
- The Tlingit History of Yakutat, Tlingit Arts and subsistence lifestyle is preferred but not required.
Skill in:
- Strong written and oral communication.

Ability to:

- Meet physical demnds to assist with set-up, clean-up, and carrying supplies between locations.
- Provide support where needed and proactively offer support to instructors, cooks, and leadership staff.

- Flexibility to adapt to shifting schedules or needs during Culture Camp operations.
- Safely transport themselves to and from the Situk River camp site.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:
The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average agility and dexterity. The employee must be able to read, write, speak and hear.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility:
This position has no formally assigned supervisory responsibility or authority.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Previous experience working in a camp, kitchen, cultural program, or youth setting is preferred but not required.
- Must be able to pass a National Criminal and State background check.
- Must be able to pass a fingerprint based National Criminal Background Check.
- Valid Alaska Driver’s License.
