Job Description – Project Engineer (BR)



The Project Engineer is primarily responsible for maintaining project documentation, coordinating procurement and submittals, supporting field operations, tracking costs and production, and identifying change-order opportunities on self-performed concrete construction projects. He / She helps ensure that concrete work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contract documents and company quality standards.



Role Summary:


The Project Engineer supports the planning, administration, execution, cost control, quality assurance, and closeout of self-performed concrete construction projects. He / She works closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, Estimators, field crews, suppliers, subcontractors, general contractors, architects, engineers, and owners. This position reports directly to the Senior Project Manager.



Core Duties and Responsibilities:



Project Administration



  • Reviews contracts, drawings, specifications, addenda, bid proposals, scope sheets, exclusions, clarifications, schedules, and turnover information for assigned projects

  • Assists the Senior Project Manager and Project Manager with project startup, including directory setup, document control, contract exhibits, insurance and compliance requirements, internal job handoff, and execution planning

  • Maintains drawing, specification, RFI, submittal, change-order, procurement, and testing logs, meeting minutes, and organized project files in accordance with company standards

  • Prepares, tracks, and distributes RFIs related to concrete scope, such as reinforcing, embeds, elevations, mixes, joint layout, vapor barriers, curing, finishing, tolerances, and sequencing

  • Prepares and reviews submittals for concrete materials and systems, including mix designs, reinforcing steel, formwork, vapor barriers, curing compounds, and embeds, for completeness and compliance



Field Coordination and Operations Support



  • Works with Project Managers, Superintendents, General Superintendents, and Foremen to plan concrete placements, including crew and equipment needs, concrete supply, pump coordination, deliveries, site access, pour sequencing, curing plans, and weather contingencies

  • Coordinates procurement, delivery, and tracking of reinforcing steel, concrete, formwork, embeds, curing materials, equipment rentals, pumps, sawcutting, and testing services

  • Reviews project schedules and short-interval plans to identify incomplete predecessor work, inspection requirements, material lead times, access limitations, and sequencing conflicts

  • Participates in pre-pour, progress, safety, and quality-control meetings and site walks, and promptly communicates approved RFIs, submittals, revised drawings, and schedule changes to field teams

  • Documents field conditions, progress, delays, rework, and weather impacts, and helps resolve field issues involving layout, elevations, embeds, joints, forming, placement logistics, finishing, and curing



Cost Control and Change Management



  • Assists with budget setup, cost-code development, committed, labor, material, and equipment cost tracking, and cost-to-complete forecasting

  • Reviews and processes purchase orders, rental and subcontractor agreements, invoices, delivery tickets, and concrete batch tickets for accuracy and compliance

  • Tracks installed quantities, labor hours, material usage, equipment utilization, and production rates against estimate assumptions and budgets, and assists with monthly cost reports, cash-flow projections, billing backup, and forecasts

  • Identifies and documents scope gaps, design revisions, field directives, schedule impacts, delays, and changed conditions that may support change orders or claims

  • Assists with pricing change orders and prepares supporting documentation, including notices, time-and-material and extra-work tickets, field approvals, signatures, photographs, and daily reports



Quality Control and Technical Support



  • Supports the company's concrete quality-control program and reviews specifications for mix design, placement, finishing, curing, testing, jointing, and tolerance requirements

  • Coordinates third-party testing and inspections, including cylinder, slump, air-content, and temperature testing, reinforcing and special inspections, and floor flatness/levelness testing when applicable

  • Tracks test reports, cylinder breaks, deficiency notices, and nonconformance items, and documents compliance with submittals, contract documents, ACI guidance, ASTM standards, and codes

  • Participates in punch-list walks and tracks corrective-action items through closeout



Safety and Compliance



  • Promotes a safety-first culture and supports compliance with company safety policies, project-specific safety plans, customer requirements, and OSHA regulations

  • Assists with pre-task planning, activity hazard analyses, and concrete-placement safety planning, and promptly communicates unsafe conditions and work-area hazards to project supervision

  • Supports environmental compliance, including concrete washout, stormwater controls, material storage, trucking, and waste disposal



Client, Vendor, and Internal Communication



  • Maintains professional, responsive communication with general contractors, owners, architects, engineers, inspectors, suppliers, testing agencies, subcontractors, and field personnel

  • Prepares meeting agendas and minutes, progress updates, look-ahead schedules, procurement status reports, and customer correspondence, and communicates action items to the team

  • Supports dispute avoidance through timely documentation, clear communication, contract compliance, and prompt escalation of risks or unresolved issues



Project Closeout



  • Assists with closeout requirements, including final submittals, test reports, warranties, as-built information, punch-list completion, retainage release, final lien waivers, and turnover packages

  • Participates in internal closeout reviews and helps capture lessons learned on cost, productivity, schedule, procurement, quality, safety, and customer satisfaction



Requirements:



  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with high attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate documentation under deadlines

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with office personnel, field supervision, craft workers, customers, design professionals, suppliers, and trade partners

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, priorities, deadlines, and active project issues simultaneously

  • Ability to work independently while recognizing when issues require escalation to the Senior Project Manager or project leadership

  • Professional judgment and discretion in handling project financials, contracts, pricing, customer communications, and proprietary information

  • Proactive approach to learning and to identifying scope, cost, schedule, quality, and safety risks, along with personal accountability, reliability, and openness to coaching and feedback

  • Willingness to spend substantial time in the field to develop a practical understanding of concrete means and methods, labor production, equipment, and jobsite constraints

  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel regularly to project sites and supplier/vendor locations

  • Physical ability to: lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds; bend, stoop, and walk in various terrains



Education and Experience:



  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Business, Operations Management, or a related field preferred but not required

  • Previous construction experience is not required; recent graduates and candidates transitioning from related administrative, technical, operations, logistics, or coordination roles are encouraged to apply

  • Internship, field exposure, estimating, project coordination, construction-related coursework, or commercial construction experience is helpful but not required

  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, or willingness to develop this skill and learn concrete operations, procurement, scheduling, and cost tracking through training and mentorship

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams

  • Experience with Bluebeam Revu, Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, BuildingConnected, Sage, Viewpoint, or similar software is helpful but not required

  • Knowledge of the following is beneficial but not required at the time of hire:

    • Self-performed concrete work, including foundations, walls, slabs, flatwork, paving, reinforcing, embeds, formwork, shoring, and post-tensioning coordination

    • Ready-mix ordering, mix designs, pumping, placement, finishing, curing, sawcutting, and concrete testing and quality requirements under common ASTM and ACI standards

    • Labor productivity tracking, crew planning, cost controls, contract documents, and change-order and delay documentation
