The Controls Network Infrastructure Designer supports the Controls Engineering team by managing fiber optic and network infrastructure design, drawing reviews, and resolving connectivity issues that impact control system operations. This role maintains reliable communication infrastructure between substations and collection system facilities, enabling successful integration of controls and SCADA equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
Review substation plans and collection system drawings at 30%, 60%, 90%, and IFC phases to identify fiber junction mismatches and missing equipment
Verify hardware and configuration in IT communication server rack and SCADA rack with Control PLC hardware
Verify consistency between substation and collection system fiber routing plans
Flag errors in published drawings and coordinate corrections with Engineering EOR design teams
Maintain accuracy of as-built documentation for control network infrastructure Infrastructure Design & Planning:
Design fiber optic cable routes (aerial, underground, buried) connecting substations to collection systems
Audit drawings for conduit systems, junction boxes, and network equipment placement
Perform route analysis and develop fiber route maps for control system communications
Design static Ethernet networks, switch configurations, and basic network implementations
Estimate costs and timelines for network infrastructure components
Create Bills of Materials (BOMs) for fiber, switches, and network equipment
Order and coordinate shipping of missing network components
Provide commissioning assistance for network infrastructure testing
Maintain records of fiber splicing, network topology, and equipment configurations
Develop restoration procedures for fiber damage and network failures
Perform routine inspections of control network infrastructure
Support emergency response for communication system outages
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Associate's degree in engineering, telecommunications, or equivalent experience
3+ years hands-on experience with fiber optic design and installation
Proficiency in CAD software and network design tools
Understanding of IT infrastructure, static IP addressing, Ethernet switches, and basic firewall concepts
Knowledge of telecommunications infrastructure
Experience with outside plant construction standards and practices
