Propulsion Analyst I – Defense Systems



Summary


Vaya Space aims to make space access affordable, safe, and sustainable. We use modern manufacturing and physics-driven design to innovate solutions for today's challenges. Our hybrid rocket engines, made from recycled thermoplastics, are set to revolutionize the industry by addressing safety, affordability, and sustainability.


 


We're expanding our mission beyond commercial spaceflight to enhance U.S. defense capabilities. As a Propulsion Analyst, you'll create conceptual designs and analyze the performance of hybrid propulsion systems for defense missions like tactical missiles, hypersonic air-breathing propulsion systems, and missile defense.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities



  • Perform detailed performance analysis of hybrid rocket propulsion systems.

  • Develop and validate propulsion system models using tools such as CEA or in-house simulation software.

  • Generate and evaluate conceptual designs of hybrid rocket propulsion systems using first-order performance analysis.

  • Analyze test data from hot-fire engine tests to assess engine health, performance margins, and anomaly root causes.

  • Collaborate with design, test, and systems engineering teams to define propulsion system requirements.

  • Support engine development programs through trade studies, performance optimization, and risk assessments.

  • Generate technical documentation, including analysis reports, test plans, and design review materials for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Participate in design reviews and provide propulsion performance insight and recommendations.


 


Qualifications



  • B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, physics, applied mathematics, or similar technical disciplines

  • academic and technical fundamental understanding of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, combustion, and heat transfer

  • Experience with chemical combustion solvers such as NASA CEA

  • Working knowledge of MATLAB, Python, or similar software for developing analysis/design tools

  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and system requirements

  • Willingness to work flexible hours as necessary

  • US Person as defined in 22 CFR Part 120.15 (U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, and those given asylum in the United States, and temporary residents granted amnesty) since work includes ITAR controlled technical data

  • Eligible to gain and maintain a SECRET clearance if required



Preferred Skills and Education



  • M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, physics, or applied mathematics

  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills to assist in problem-solving on large interdisciplinary teams

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to concisely present engineering problems and solutions

  • Self-motivated and capable of developing self-regulated high detail result-oriented work with minimal input and direction

  • Experience with hybrid, solid, or liquid bi-propellant rocket engines and associated test systems

  • Experience with Multiphysics Analysis tools such as STAR-CCM+ or similar software

  • Experience with supersonic or hypersonic airbreathing propulsion systems

  • Passion for finding new solutions to unique missile propulsion problems
