Job Description - Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

Position Overview:

As part of a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare providers under the leadership of the Director of Behavioral Health Services with collaboration with both the Chief Medical Officer and Director of Population Health, the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) works across all departments to remove barriers for accessing healthcare. Providers must incorporate standard medical practices and health center policies into their clinical practice and deliver culturally sensitive and appropriate care for an outpatient, primary care health center serving a multicultural, multilingual patient population. 

Schedule: 

We offer flexible schedules ranging from 16-40 hours per week, Monday–Friday.

Responsibilities: 

  • Performs comprehensive mental health/behavioral health assessments, including a thorough history and physical examination, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, medication management, and evaluation of the psychosocial and family factors sufficient to diagnose and manage common acute and chronic psychiatric conditions, and to coordinate any necessary follow-up care.
  • Provides regular and ongoing medication management for psychiatric conditions, including initiation, titration, and monitoring of psychotropic medications.
  • Manages common acute and chronic mental illnesses, and initiates life-saving procedures in emergencies.
  • Works directly with the Behavioral Health and Medical departments to support integrated, whole-person care.
  • Consults with the Director of Behavioral Health Services and collaborates with the Chief Medical Officer or designee as needed for clinical guidance, complex case review, and oversight. 
  • Promotes preventive mental health care through periodic assessments, screenings, and patient guidance on behavioral health maintenance and healthy habits.
  • Discusses and refers complex or high-priority patient cases.
  • Works as a member of the healthcare team to educate patients and the community on preventive mental health and behavioral health concepts. 
  • Directs medical assistants, lab personnel, and other non-professional medical staff as appropriate.
  • May provide in-service training for staff in selected topics within scope of practice, as appropriate or as requested by the CMO, Director of Behavioral Health Services, or their designee(s).
  • Performs all duties for successful electronic health records maintenance, including completion of medical records and documentation, inbox and results management, coding, and timely chart sign-off within organizational timelines.
  • Performs internal quality control audits and maintains the standards of care consistent with specialty and organizational requirements.
  • Performs all duties and services in full compliance with the organizations Service Excellence Standards and adheres to all applicable codes of ethics and the organization’s code of conduct for clinical providers.
  • Demonstration a commitment to continued professional learning and growth as a practitioner.
  • Attends internal and external meetings, workshops, and conferences, and participates on task forces or committees, as necessary and/or required.
  • Must be willing to travel to and from the service sites as needed by CMO or designee.
  • Provides additional assistance within and outside of clinical arena, as requested and/or as appropriate, to ensure the ongoing success of the organization.
  • Works as a member of the health care team and assists in education of patients and the community in preventive mental health care and behavioral health maintenance concepts.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Behavioral Health Services.

Compensation: $79.11 – $100.22 per hour ($162,548.80 – $208,457.60 annually), plus a a signing bonus!

This position is represented by SEIU, with compensation and benefits determined by the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Salary is based on the wage scales outlined in the agreement. Federal and State Loan Programs:

TVHC is designated as both a Medically Underserved Area (MUA) and a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA), making employees eligible to apply for the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) and other federal and state loan repayment and forgiveness programs available to qualifying healthcare professionals.


Requirements

  • Board certification from a certified Nurse Practitioner or related program which entails training as well as practice in the above-mentioned duties.
  • Current, valid license to practice medicine in the State of California, including DEA license and CPR required.
  • Two years of experience as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner preferred, but not required.
  • Previous experience providing medical care within a community health setting preferred.

Qualifications:

  • Have a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of behavioral health and psychiatric medicine.
  • Demonstrated ability to build the trust and respect of patients, staff, colleagues, external contacts, and other organizational members.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a team.
  • Understands and is committed to maintaining highest level of confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet or exceed TVHC’s Service Excellence Standards.
  • Must be willing and able to work periodic evenings and/or weekends, as needed.
  • Must have ability to travel to other TVHC sites or locations to perform duties or attend meetings as needed.
  • Bilingual, especially Spanish, is preferred but not required.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills required, including creativity, resourcefulness, timeliness, and technical knowledge related to analyzing and resolving medical problems.
  • Sensitivity to needs of culturally and linguistically diverse patient and employee populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize computer technology and to willingness to develop and adapt to the evolving technological requirements of modern medical health center practices required.
