Job Description - Psychologist - Cancer

Overview

Legacy’s mission of making life better for others extends to the whole person—including the psychological well-being of individuals facing cancer. Our psychologists specialize in supporting adult patients navigating the complex emotional, behavioral, and cognitive challenges associated with cancer diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and advanced illness.

For many patients, psychological care is essential to coping with distress, uncertainty, and life transitions brought on by cancer. For others, mental health concerns may impact treatment adherence, recovery, or quality of life. In every case, care must be delivered with clinical expertise, compassion, and respect.

Are you passionate about improving the psychological health of adults affected by cancer and contributing to whole-person, integrated care? If so, we invite you to join the Legacy community.

Responsibilities

The Psychologist provides comprehensive psychological services to adult oncology patients, including evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral concerns related to cancer and its treatment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Delivering evidence-based psychological care to adults coping with cancer across the continuum of care (diagnosis, treatment, surveillance/survivorship, and end-of-life).
  • Addressing distress, anxiety, depression, trauma, adjustment difficulties, and cognitive changes associated with cancer and medical treatments.
  • Supporting patients whose psychological symptoms may affect engagement in medical care, treatment adherence, or overall health outcomes.
  • Collaborating closely with oncologists, nurses, social workers, and other interdisciplinary team members to provide integrated, patient-centered care.
  • Offering consultation and guidance to the care team regarding behavioral health considerations, coping strategies, and family dynamics.
  • Conducting psychological assessments and, when appropriate, cognitive screening or testing to inform diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Monitoring treatment progress and adjusting interventions to optimize psychological and medical outcomes.
  • Adhering to established professional, departmental, and program standards in oncology and behavioral health care.
  • Bridging/transitioning care for patients who have psychological needs that extend beyond the scope of the psycho-oncology service.

Qualifications

Education:

PhD or PsyD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two years of post-doctoral experience providing psychological services in a medical setting, preferably with adult oncology or other complex specialty  medical populations.

 Skills:

  • Demonstrated expertise in assessment and treatment of adult emotional, cognitive, and behavioral disorders, particularly in the context of serious medical illness.
  • Strong competency in addressing psychological responses to cancer, including adjustment, grief, and health-related anxiety.
  • Experience treating cognitive and psychological concerns related to or exacerbated by medical conditions (e.g., treatment-related cognitive changes, chronic illness adjustment).
  • Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary medical team and communicate clearly with both patients and providers.
  • Commitment to culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and patient-centered care

Licensure

  • Current licensure as a psychologist by the applicable State Board of Psychologist Examiners.
  • Must be eligible for membership in the hospital medical staff.
Sorry, no J1 or H-1B visa opportunities.
