Job Description - Public Affairs/Watchdog Editor

Compensation for this position is comprised of a base salary plusincentive compensation. The base salary range is $65,000 to $90,000 per year. Additional incentives bring total potential compensation to $71,500 to $100,000.

Advance Media New York, the largest news and information website in Central New York, is looking for an editor with proven strength in enterprise and investigative journalism to manage a team of reporters in the newsroom of Syracuse.com and The Post-Standard.

The successful candidate will help identify and lead coverage that has impact: content that reveals important issues, promotes change and holds accountable those in power.

We want a candidate who would teach and mentor the public affairs team on coverage strategy, investigative techniques, interview skills, source building, filing public records requests, powerful writing and other strategies.

This person will be responsible for producing content in many formats stories, video, photos, data and audio.

For this position, we are looking for a candidate with:

Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or a related field required

A minimum of five years in journalism with a proven ability in writing/editing in-depth reporting. Preferred at least two years of management and/or team leadership experience

Ability to guide and motivate reporters to do their best work and to develop their skills

The ability to produce quality work quickly effectively in breaking news situations

The tools to dive deeper into issues and trends across key topics, including government, social equity, education, business, housing, public safety and health care

A command of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure

Experience using social media to identify potential stories and promote content

Self-starter, detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and manage multiple complex projects to on-time delivery

Ability to develop news content that differentiates the organization from competitors

Ability to create and implement strategies to respond to the evolving nature of the industry by experimenting with new models, platforms and ideas to stimulate audience engagement and revenue growth
