Public Health Nurse Reproductive Health (Health Services)

Position Summary

This position is funded by a grant for a duration of time as defined by the grant.

Provides public health nursing services within the Health Department’s Reproductive Health Program. Assesses reproductive health needs, implements approved clinical protocols, coordinates care and follow-up services, provides patient education, and supports positive reproductive health outcomes. 

Pay Grade: 52H 

Minimum Qualifications

• Two (2) years of registered nursing experience and an AD/Diploma from an accredited school of nursing, OR
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing.
• Active, unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Tennessee (OR application for license transfer to TN must be in process for consideration).
• Reproductive health, women’s health, or outpatient clinic experience preferred.
• PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Assesses patients for reproductive health risks and concerns using the nursing process and applicable Tennessee Department of Health, CDC, and Reproductive Health Program standards. 
• Performs authorized diagnostic, treatment, and follow-up procedures under medical direction and in accordance with established clinical protocols and safety standards. 
• Provides care coordination, case management, counseling, and follow-up to ensure continuity and quality of care. 
• Investigates clinical concerns, identifies barriers to care, and consults with providers and supervisors as appropriate. 
• Maintains accurate and timely medical records and reports required clinical and program data. 
• Educates patients and community groups on disease prevention, family planning, and reproductive health. 
• Coordinates referrals and establishes linkages with community healthcare providers and other resources to address patient needs. 
• Participates in quality-improvement activities, team meetings, staff development, and training for employees and students. 
• Assists with oversight of assigned staff or specialty functions, including inventory, information sharing, and representing the supervisor at meetings. 
• Performs other related duties as required or directed.

• Knowledge of professional nursing practices, public health principles, and reproductive healthcare standards. 
• Knowledge of social and economic factors affecting patients, families, and communities. 
• Skill in patient assessment, care coordination, counseling, documentation, and case management. 
• Ability to apply clinical protocols, exercise sound nursing judgment, and make evidence-based decisions. 
• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing. 
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with patients, coworkers, healthcare providers, and community partners. 
• Ability to organize priorities, manage time effectively, and maintain systems for tracking patient care and follow-up.
• Ability to collect and analyze clinical data and contribute to quality-improvement recommendations.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) or similar County software applications. 

Special Requirements

• Must possess a valid Tennessee driver's license or secure one as of the employment date.
• Must have daily access to an operable automobile and meet county requirements for automobile insurance upon the date of employment.
• Must be flexible and available to work some nights and/or weekends.
• Must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Tennessee (Licensure application must have been submitted on the date of employment).
• Must maintain all required certifications and licenses throughout the duration of employment.

The residency requirement shall not apply to certain public safety/civil service employees.
