Public Policy Analyst
Job Summary
The Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute is seeking a public policy analyst to join the demography team. This position will primarily provide technical support, and eventually subject-area expertise, of the subcounty (city and census tract) annual population estimate program. This includes gathering demographic, housing, and construction data from internal and external resources, incorporating knowledge of local context and conditions, geocoding and analysis with GIS software, and implementing existing demographic models with programming scripts. The successful candidate will be able to research and troubleshoot when data, assumptions, or models require adjusting.
Additionally, the research associate will work with other demographic team members to create original content that summarizes demographic findings with written reports, data visualizations, and other duties as assigned. They will accurately communicate verbally and in writing to technical and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions1. Responsible for technical support of subcounty estimate program.2. Acquires, compiles, and analyzes data from a variety of sources.3. Supports the research efforts of the demography team.4. Utilizes analysis, writing, and visualization skills to produce demography team products.5. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.6. Ability to meet deadlines.7. Ability to work on multiple projects at a time.
Minimum Qualifications
Preferences
QualificationsRequires a bachelor’s degree and 1-2 years of relevant experience (one year of graduate education is equivalent to two years of experience).Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint) and GIS products.Experience with programs such as Tableau, R, SAS, Stata, or Python.Experience with data and data analysis.Strong communication skills, especially written.
Preferred QualificationsExperience with demographic concepts and population data.Knowledge of Census Bureau data and products.Master’s degree.Content knowledge in social sciences.Experience with databases.Ability to effectively present findings to researchers and stakeholders
