The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is a federally chartered, nonpartisan institution that was created by the US Congress to serve as America’s national memorial to the victims of the Holocaust and an educational institution dedicated to the history and lessons of the Holocaust. Information about the role

The David M. Rubenstein National Institute for Holocaust Documentation’s (Rubenstein Institute) major responsibility is to collect, preserve, and make available the historical record of the Holocaust and to support with its stewardship of the Collection of Record the Museum's wide-ranging efforts in the areas of research, exhibition, publication, education, and memorialization. This position is located in the Digital Access Division.

The Digital Access Division is responsible for the digitization of all the historic collections materials, as well as managing collections acquired digitally. The division helps develop and implement the systems and structures that support the long-term access to and preservation of all the Museum's digital historical collections materials. The primary purpose of the position is to perform quality control on digitized materials from our collection, ensuring they conform to Museum standards for correctness and accuracy.

The position is located in the Shapell Center in Bowie, MD. This is a full-time, donated (non-federal), three-year term position paid with the Museum’s private funds. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Duties, and Responsibilities for the role

• Process digitized collections materials for a wide variety of formats ensuring they meet Museum specifications including, but not limited to, file naming and formatting.


• Inventory, track and copy a wide variety of digitized collections materials and ensure proper and safe processing.


• Transfer digital files onto network storage devices using Museum tools and processes.


• Ensure digitized historical Collection materials are correct by conducting color comparisons/corrections, cropping, and deskewing.


• Ensure accuracy of imaged collections by comparing to physical collections material.


• Prepare digital files for ingest into management and preservation systems.


• Serve on cross-office teams, projects, and initiatives to advance the Rubenstein Institute’s priorities and goals, as needed.


• Coordinates and communicates with colleagues and key stakeholders to share resources and integrate efforts across the Rubenstein Institute


• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications for the role

• Experience working in a research library, museum, or archives setting.


• At least one year of experience with photo, video or audio editing software.


• Knowledge of file naming practices and metadata standards.


• Strong organizational and time management skills.


• Must be detail-oriented and self-motivated.


• Basic familiarity with the history of 20th-century Europe or the Holocaust.

Preferred Qualifications for the role

• Experience with Capture One software preferred.


• Knowledge of archival cataloging and arrangement standards.


• Object or archival handling experience.
