Radiology Supervisor

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The Radiology Supervisor is a working clinical leader responsible for coordinating daily operations, patient flow, staff assignments, clinical quality, regulatory readiness, and frontline staff support across Radiology. The Supervisor provides direct imaging care within the individual’s licensure, certification, and demonstrated competencies and serves as the acting department leader in the Radiology Manager’s absence within delegated authority. The position partners with the Radiology Manager to advance JRMC’s pillars of People, Finance, Service, Growth, and Quality while supporting safe, timely, efficient, and patient-centered imaging services.

Role distinction: The Supervisor directs daily work and resolves immediate operational issues. The Radiology Manager retains accountability for department strategy, budget approval, hiring, formal performance management and corrective action, contracts, capital planning, and final policy approval.

This position is full time, benefited, working 80 hours per pay period, Hours are Monday - Friday. 

JOB FUNCTIONS

People

• Coordinates daily staffing assignments, modality coverage, breaks, call coverage, and workflow based on patient volume, staff competencies, and department priorities. Escalates unresolved staffing needs to the Radiology Manager.
• Serves as the first-line resource for staff questions, operational concerns, and clinical workflow issues. Provides timely direction within established policies and the authority delegated by the Radiology Manager.
• Supports a positive and accountable work environment through visible leadership, respectful communication, staff rounding, recognition, and reinforcement of JRMC Healthy Roots.
• Communicates patterns involving attendance, conduct, competency, or performance to the Radiology Manager and assists with follow-up as requested.
• Promotes accountability through timely coaching, conflict resolution, recognition, and consistent application of departmental expectations. Facilitates difficult conversations professionally while fostering a respectful and engaged work environment.
• Assists with interviewing, onboarding, orientation, competency validation, cross-training, continuing education, and professional development of imaging and support staff.
• Delegates work according to each team member’s licensure, certification, training, demonstrated competency, and assigned responsibilities.
• Supports student clinical experiences and collaborates with educational partners as assigned.
• Functions as the acting department leader in the Radiology Manager’s absence within delegated authority, addressing immediate operational and patient-care needs and escalating significant issues to the appropriate administrator.
• Maintains competency in assigned imaging modalities and serves as a clinical resource by providing hands-on assistance.

Finance

• Supports responsible use of labor by monitoring daily productivity, patient volume, overtime, call-back, and staffing utilization and by recommending workflow adjustments to the Radiology Manager.
• Monitors supplies and inventory in assigned areas, reduces waste, and communicates purchasing or replacement needs to the Radiology Manager.
• Monitors departmental productivity indicators including room utilization, patient throughput, turnaround times, overtime, callback utilization, and staffing efficiency. Recommend workflow improvements to optimize operational performance to Radiology Manager.
• Coordinates initial response to equipment malfunction or downtime, including staff communication, service notification, workflow adjustments, and escalation to the Radiology Manager.
• Provides operational input regarding equipment, technology, supplies, service agreements, and capital needs. Budget approval, contract management, and capital planning remain the responsibility of the Radiology Manager.

Service

• Coordinates daily patient flow to support timely access, efficient use of imaging resources, and communication of delays to patients, families, providers, and affected departments.
• Reviews schedules for accuracy, appropriateness, required orders, preparation, and available resources. Works with scheduling staff and technologists to resolve concerns before they affect patient care.
• Responds to patient, family, provider, and staff concerns using AIDET and HEAT principles. Resolves concerns within delegated authority and promptly escalates unresolved or serious concerns.
• Develops collaborative working relationships with radiologists, referring providers, nursing leadership, clinic managers, and ancillary departments to improve communication, patient access, and operational efficiency.
• Promotes effective hand-off communication, patient education, informed consent processes, privacy, and confidentiality.
• Monitors patient experience feedback and supports improvement actions in collaboration with the Radiology Manager and team.

Growth

• Supports implementation of new equipment, technology, procedures, and service-line initiatives by coordinating workflow preparation, staff education, competency validation, and go-live activities.
• Participates in departmental goal setting and carries out assigned tactics that advance access, quality, efficiency, workforce development, and service growth.
• Identifies opportunities to improve workflow. Participates in workflow redesign initiatives to improve quality, efficiency, patient satisfaction, and staff engagement. 
• Expand staff capabilities, reduce delays, and strengthen coordination with referring providers and departments.
• Supports succession planning by developing staff, encouraging certification and cross-training, and demonstrating readiness for expanded leadership responsibilities.
• Participates in leadership development, committees, workgroups, and special projects as assigned.

Quality

• Coordinates and verifies completion of assigned quality control, preventive maintenance, equipment testing, service documentation, and corrective actions.
• Supports compliance with Joint Commission, American College of Radiology, MQSA, state, federal, radiation-safety initiatives, equipment quality assurance programs, and departmental survey preparedness and audits as delegated by the Radiology Manager.
• Assists with policy and procedure implementation, staff education, audits, tracer activities, and review of documentation. Recommend policy or workflow changes to the Radiology Manager.
• Assists with investigation of patient safety events, employee incidents, equipment events, and occurrence reports. Participates in root cause analyses, corrective action planning, and follow-up activities.
• Supports PACS/RIS and imaging-technology operations, identifies errors or downtime, communicates disruptions, and coordinates with Information Services, vendors, and the Radiology Manager as appropriate.
• Provides direct imaging care within the supervisor’s current licensure, certification, privileges, and demonstrated competencies when scheduled or when needed to support patient care and department operations.
• Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

1. Preparation & Training - Bachelor's degree in Radiologic Sciences. Current certification in an imaging discipline through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB), as applicable to the individual’s practice. Current North Dakota licensure is required when applicable. BLS certification is required. CPI training must be completed within the timeframe established by the department orientation checklist. Additional advanced-modality certification and leadership education are preferred.
2. Work Experience - Minimum of Five years of progressively responsible medical imaging experience required. Three years charge, lead, supervisory, project leadership, or demonstrated informal leadership experience.. Hospital or acute-care imaging experience is preferred.
3. Attendance - Punctual and regular attendance is essential. The supervisor is expected to report as scheduled, remain available for the assigned work period, and provide leadership coverage as operational needs require, including occasional weekends, holidays, evenings, or call-back.
4. Analytical Ability - Ability to interpret clinical, operational, quality, staffing, scheduling, and equipment information; identify trends; establish priorities; and recommend practical solutions. 
5. Problem Solving - Demonstrates sound judgment in addressing patient flow, staffing, equipment, quality, and service concerns. Resolves routine issues independently within delegated authority and escalates complex, high-risk, or unresolved issues appropriately. 
6. Contact and Interpersonal Skills - Communicates clearly and respectfully with patients, families, physicians, advanced practice providers, staff, vendors, and leaders. Demonstrates discretion, tact, emotional intelligence, coaching ability, and effective communication during routine and high-pressure situations. 
7. Independent Judgement - Works under the direction of the Radiology Manager and within established policies. Exercises independent judgment for daily assignments, workflow coordination, immediate patient-care concerns, and operational decisions within delegated authority. 
8. Responsibility for Making Decisions & Recommendations - Implements administrative decisions in a professional and constructive manner while maintaining positive communication with staff and leadership.
9. Policies and Procedures - Responsible for the implementation, review, and revision of departmental policies and procedures. Ensures compliance with hospital policies as well as regulatory and accreditation requirements, including standards established by the American College of Radiology (ACR), Joint Commission, and applicable state and federal regulations.
10. Contact with Others - Frequent interaction with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, radiology personnel, patients, patient families, vendors, and hospital leadership. Requires clear and effective communication in both routine and high-pressure situations to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality imaging services.
11. Supervising the Work of Others - Provides functional supervision and daily direction to imaging and support personnel. Assigns work, supports orientation and competencies, provides coaching and feedback, and communicates performance concerns to the Radiology Manager. Participates in interviews and evaluations as requested. Final hiring, formal corrective action, and employment decisions remain with the Radiology Manager and Human Resources. 
12. Responsibility for Welfare of Others - Work directly affects patient safety, diagnostic quality, staff safety, and timely clinical decision-making. Maintains patient rights, privacy, confidentiality, cultural sensitivity, and compliance with imaging and radiation-safety standards. 
13. Mental/Visual Effort - Requires sustained attention, prioritization, and frequent interruption management. Visual acuity is necessary for reviewing images, orders, documentation, schedules, equipment displays, and quality data. Must communicate effectively in written and spoken English. 
14. Working Conditions - Works in clinical imaging and office environments and may encounter patients with infectious diseases, blood and body fluids, odors, ionizing radiation, magnetic fields, and other modality-specific hazards. Follows Standard Precautions, radiation-safety requirements, MRI safety requirements when applicable, and the JRMC Safety Management Program. OSHA Job Classification: Category I—occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens. 
15. Physical & Sensory Effort - Frequent standing and walking with intermittent sitting. May assist with positioning, lifting, moving, or transferring patients and equipment. Requires reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, fine-motor dexterity, hearing, visual observation, and the ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds in accordance with safe patient-handling practices. 
16. Promotion - The natural line of promotion for this position is Radiology Manager, based on demonstrated performance, qualifications, experience, and organizational needs. 
17. Background - A comprehensive background check and drug screening will be conducted as a condition of employment for this role. 
18. Drug Screen - A urine drug screening is required for all positions and must be completed within 30 days of the date of hire.
