Job Description - R&D Fabrication Technician

Description

COMPANY OVERVIEW: MOBIS Technical Center of North America is the Research & Development Center for Hyundai MOBIS, a Tier 1 supplier and an affiliate under Hyundai Motor Group. MOBIS produces and supplies a wide variety of automotive components to customers including component modules (chassis, cockpit and front-end module), core system, eco-friendly and DAS-mechatronics. Mobis delivers the design and development of advanced engineering, autonomous driving, infotainment, component modules, safety, brake and steering systems, lamp, ICS/electronics and software development solutions that consider the safety and convenience of our customers as well as the future.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Fabrication Technician will work with R&D Engineers to support prototyping and fabrication projects. This position is responsible for using specialized tools and equipment to design, build, assemble, and repair various production and advanced development automotive parts and products. The technician must have the ability to fabricate using techniques like metal bending, welding, drilling, and grinding, and working with other materials like wood, rubber, plastic, and fiberglass. Must also have knowledge of automotive electrical principles and the ability to fabricate electrical systems. Responsibilities also include reading technical drawings, troubleshooting issues, and following safety procedures.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

Typical responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Using tools and equipment to build components or products, often involving welding, cutting, shaping, and assembling.
  • Experience including fabrication, machining, MIG/TIG welding, and assembly and operating  machinery like mills and lathes, as well as hand tools and power tools. 
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in all general automotive systems, mechanical and electrical, with hands-on, real world vehicle experience.
  • Reading and interpreting technical drawings, schematics, and blueprints to understand fabrication requirements. 
  • Inspecting finished products for quality and accuracy, ensuring they meet specifications. 
  • Identifying and resolving issues with fabrication or equipment, including making necessary repairs. 
  • Following all safety protocols and procedures, including OSHA guidelines. 
  • Working  with engineers, production teams, and other technicians to achieve project goals and required timing.

ADDITIONAL DESIRED SKILLS: 

In addition to the required skills, these experiences and capabilities are desired:

  • Experience working as a  mechanic in a vehicle garage, using vehicle lifts, automotive tools, diagnostic equipment and performing vehicle maintenance (brakes,  alignment, oil changes).
  • Vehicle logistics and loading  dock competency (trucks, trailers, towing, vehicle recovery, forklift).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Be reliable (with reliable mode of transportation).
  • Strong work ethic and pride in workmanship, attention to detail.
  • Good working background in Windows based computers and Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to use 2D and 3D CAD systems (e.g., AutoCAD, Catia, etc.) to examine models and/or create designs for fabrication or 3D printing.
  • Ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing.
  • Multitasking and organizational skillset.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate degree or certification in engineering science, automotive mechanics, electronics or related area.
  • Bachelors in engineering or engineering science preferred.
  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience working as an automotive mechanic, fabricator, or similar.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Position requires occasional or frequent moderate physical activity. Ability to lift items like vehicle tires and car batteries.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

  • A  typical work week is 40 hours/week, M-F

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Shop, garage or laboratory work environment which involves some exposure to moderate risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions.
  • In-field  or track testing may involve exposure to unpleasant elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, chemicals, etc.
