Role Overview

We are seeking an R&D Specialist / Engineer to lead and support development of novel solutions in flexible packaging and folding cartons. You’ll help bring new materials, designs, and processes from idea to production while aligning with product requirements and business goals.

What You’ll Do

• Develop & evaluate new materials, structures, and converting processes for flexible packaging and folding cartons to hit performance, cost, and sustainability targets

• Collaborate with marketing, operations, quality, and sales to understand needs and drive innovation from concept through commercialization

• Design & optimize packaging systems: structural dielines, prototypes, pallet patterns, etc.

• Conduct lab analysis, coordinate production trials and supplier testing to validate performance, shelf life, and manufacturability

• Write and maintain technical specifications, test methods, SOPs, and documentation for packaging components

• Ensure compliance with regulatory, food safety, quality, and legal standards; support sustainability and waste reduction efforts

• Monitor and evaluate new technologies, industry developments, and materials in packaging

• Lead troubleshooting, root cause analyses, and continuous improvement activities on plant lines

• Provide technical support and training to internal teams and supply chain / supplier partners

What We’re Looking For

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Science, Mechanical/Materials Engineering, or a related technical field

• 3+ years of experience in packaging R&D roles (flexible packaging or folding cartons preferred)

• Strong knowledge of polymer processing, carton conversion, inks/coatings/adhesives, and packaging machinery

• Experience with CAD software and packaging modeling/design tools

• Excellent project management, communication, and problem-solving skills

• Self-motivated, able to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced development environment

Preferred:

• Experience with folding carton & flexographic printing methods

• Familiarity with sustainable materials / eco-friendly packaging solutions; supplier or copacker experience a plus

• Understanding of food or medical packaging compliance requirements

Working Conditions

• Based in lab and plant environments; exposure to machinery, dust, noise

• Frequent standing, walking, bending; may require lifting up to ~50 lbs

• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required
