JOB DESCRIPTION:
General Statement of Duties: Plans and implements the day-to-day support details of a department that oversees year-round care programs and recreation programs for children 5-11 years of age; does related work as required.
Distinguishing Features of the Class: An employee in this classification is responsible for creating, planning, and implementing year-round activities, recreation, and enrichment programs for early childhood and youth programs Work is performed under the supervision of an Early Childhood and Youth Programs Manager or Supervisor, who reviews work primarily based on results attained, feedback from department staff, committees, and direct observation. Supervision is not normally a responsibility of positions in this classification; however, incumbents are responsible for recruiting and making recommendations regarding the hiring and training of early childhood and youth program staff, and for observing their performance and providing input to their immediate supervisor when assigned.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge: Knowledge of behavior management of children, recreational and educational activities for children, special events planning, promotion of programs, record keeping, and general office procedures and practices; knowledge of computers and basic word processing.
Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; interpersonal and customer service skills; organizational skills; and attention to detail. Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software, Google docs and spreadsheets.
Abilities: Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; work successfully with children, parents, teachers, school administrators, coworkers, and supervisors; work independently; act calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Physical Demands of the Position: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility including the ability to move materials weighing up to 35 pounds on a regular basis such as boxes/bags of activity materials, snack foods, stacking tables and chairs, etc. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 75% of the work period while working with children in activities. The employee will likely spend over 85% of the work period indoors, and exposure to temperature extremes is very minimal. Exposure to loud noise is low, and never requires ear protection. Persons with disabilities may be able to perform the essential duties of this class with reasonable accommodation. Reasonable accommodation will be evaluated on an individual basis and depends, in part, on the specific requirements for the job, the limitations related to the disability and the ability of the hiring department to accommodate the limitation.
Personal Protective Equipment: Nitrile gloves for the administration of first aid
Minimum Experience and Training: High school graduation or equivalency and four years of experience in community education, parks and recreation, or related area which included working closely with children and the general public; or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the above-described duties.
Preferred Experience and Training: Bachelor’s degree in early childhood, recreation management, child development, or a related field, and two years of progressively responsible experience in a child care, community education, recreation setting, or related area; or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the above-described duties. Valid CPRP from the National Recreation Park Association. Spanish speaking is preferred; a bilingual rate adjustment is contingent upon passing a proficiency test.
Necessary Special Requirements: Possession of or ability to obtain current First Aid and CPR/AED certificates; possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver’s license, and other AFS/DHS required reporting requirements as defined on the Oregon Registry. Completion of Oregon DHS trainings; Introduction to Childcare Health and Safety (ICCHS) and Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect (RRCAN) within first 30 days of employment. Because this job is considered safety sensitive, a drug screen test will be required prior to employment.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Hours/Shifts
Monday - Friday 9am-5pm, monthly Tuesday night meetings 6:30-8:30pm
