DEFINITION:
To create, budget, plan, organize, and implement leisure activities at assigned sites, including overseeing contractual instructors and District staff, and ensuring adequate supplies and facility use. To perform other job-related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Under general direction from the Recreation Manager Superintendent, exercises direct supervision over full-time recreation coordinators, part-time recreation program staff, contractual instructors, and volunteers.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The following duties and functions, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this classification. They are not listed in any order of importance. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Education and Experience Guidelines:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in recreation, education, physical education, public administration, or related field;
AND
Three (3) years of experience in organizing, planning and implementing recreation or community service programs and activities, including at least one (1) year of full-time experience leading and/or supervising permanent and/or temporary staff in organizing, planning and implementing recreation or community service programs and activities.
Knowledge of:
Ability to:
- Work occasional weekend and weeknight hours to assist with various programs, special events, or attend meetings as needed.
- Interpret and abide by District policies, procedures, operations and programs, and to effectively explain and enforce them.
- Analyze problems, research and identify alternative solutions and potential consequences and take appropriate corrective action.
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Establish and maintain a variety of administrative records, files and reports.
- Effectively operate a personal computer and other standard office equipment.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Motivate and educate staff and customers of the value of recreation to a healthy community.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the performance of work duties and responsibilities.
Licenses/Certifications Required:
- Possession of a valid class C California Driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record. Possession of a valid class B license is desired.
- Possession of current CPR and First Aid certifications are highly desired, and will be required within a specified time period upon employment.
Environmental Conditions:
Incumbents perform job some duties indoors in a temperature controlled Office environment. They perform some duties outside with exposure to varying climate and temperature conditions and to dust, constant noise, moving objects, and other vehicles. Incumbents work with equipment powered by electricity and are in close contact with program participants, volunteers, and District staff. Incumbents frequently operate a vehicle for travel to various sites.
Physical Conditions:
On a daily basis, the essential duties of a Recreation Supervisor require the ability to sit for extended periods; to twist to reach files and equipment; to use hands and arms to reach in any direction; to repeatedly use both hands and finger dexterity to operate equipment; to verbally exchange ideas and information; to hear to receive detailed verbal information and instruction; to use a full field of vision to view objects within one foot to arm’s length and to differentiate basic colors and shades of color; to frequently see beyond 20 feet to direct and oversee sports and/or recreation activities and/or events; to lift, carry, push, pull, and grasp a variety of objects weighing an average of 50 pounds. Must occasionally have the ability to feel the attributes of objects by touch; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling; and be able to walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, and stand.
Performance Aptitudes:
Data Utilization: Requires the ability to calculate and/or tabulate data.
Includes performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational
operations.
Human Interaction: Requires the ability to perform in a supervisory
capacity over subordinate staff.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the
Ability to operate, maneuver, and/or control the actions of equipment,
machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of references
and descriptive data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals
and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability
to interpret graphs.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions
furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine
standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment
concerning choices of action.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment,
Decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally
pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

Salary and Benefits:
Monthly Salary: $5,996- $7,288
Holidays, Vacation & Leave: 15 paid holidays per year, Paid Vacation, and Paid Sick Leave.

Life Insurance: The District paid premiums for basic plan coverage for employees and dependents. Optional coverage is available at the employee’s expense.
