Job Description - Regional Clinical Director

The Problem

Severe mental illness affects over 15 million adults in the United States. Schizophrenia. Schizoaffective disorder. Bipolar I. Treatment-resistant depression. These are the conditions the rest of healthcare has systematically failed to build for.

What makes this problem different from most of healthcare is that the tools to solve it do not exist. The clinical protocols, the measurement science, the precision medicine, the technology to deliver coordinated longitudinal outpatient care for this population. None of it has been built. This is a frontier problem, and it requires frontier science and care delivery to solve.

We are developing all of it. The care, the science, the technology.

Who We Are

Amae Health is a Series B, venture-backed Public Benefit Corporation that delivers specialty outpatient care for people living with severe mental illness, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar I disorder, and treatment-resistant depression. We design and operate high-acuity, in-person clinics across the United States.

Our model integrates psychiatry, therapy, primary care, dietitians, and community health workers under one roof to deliver coordinated, longitudinal care for a population that has historically been fragmented across systems.

Leading health systems collaborate with Amae to bring this model to their communities, including NewYork-Presbyterian, Cedars-Sinai, Mass General Brigham, Novant Health, and CommonSpirit Health. Our investors include health systems such as Cedars-Sinai and CommonSpirit Health, organizations that evaluated our model clinically and chose to back it.

The Role

As we grow our California footprint, we are hiring a Regional Clinical Director to serve as the senior clinical leader across sites in Amae's Northern or Southern California regions. This is a high-impact role at the intersection of clinical excellence, people leadership, and operational accountability.

You will own the clinical outcomes across your sites, provide direct supervision and support to clinical staff, and serve as the primary escalation point for complex clinical situations. You will also be a meaningful voice in how we continuously improve our programs — identifying process gaps, strengthening team practice, and holding sites accountable to the outcomes that matter for our members.

This role is for someone who is equally comfortable in a supervision session with a new therapist and in a leadership meeting translating clinical data into action. You lead through presence, clarity, and accountability.

This role requires regular travel between the Bay Area clinics.

What You Will Do

Clinical Oversight & Outcomes

  • Own clinical quality across California sites, including PHP and IOP programs

  • Monitor and drive performance against clinical KPIs — outcomes, level-of-care transitions, treatment plan quality, documentation compliance, and member engagement

  • Serve as the senior clinical escalation point for complex cases, safety situations, and clinician judgment calls

  • Ensure consistent application of evidence-based practices across sites, in line with Amae's clinical model

  • Collaborate with the psychiatry lead and multidisciplinary team to maintain high standards of integrated care

People Leadership & Supervision

  • Provide individual and group clinical supervision to licensed and pre-licensed clinicians in accordance with California BBS requirements and Amae standards

  • Develop clinicians through regular feedback, coaching, and clear performance expectations

  • Lead hiring efforts for clinical roles in the region in partnership with the GM and HR

  • Model and reinforce a culture of psychological safety, accountability, and continuous learning

Strategy & Program Improvement

  • Partner with the GM to identify operational and clinical gaps across sites and develop targeted improvement plans

  • Lead and contribute to clinical program initiatives — including measurement-based care implementation, integrated care model refinements, and new service development

  • Translate KPI data into clear priorities for site teams; run regular clinical leadership check-ins and performance reviews

  • Represent the clinical perspective in regional and organizational planning discussions

Compliance & Standards

  • Ensure sites meet all regulatory and accreditation requirements, including Joint Commission standards

  • Oversee clinical documentation and supervision logs in compliance with California licensing requirements

  • Serve as a resource to site teams navigating ADA, duty-to-warn, mandated reporting, and other clinical-legal obligations

Who You Are

We're looking for someone who is both a strong clinician and a confident leader — someone who can hold a team to high standards while also building the trust that makes those standards achievable.

  • You've led multi-site clinical teams before and know how to develop people, not just manage them

  • You think in systems — when something isn't working, you look for the root cause before jumping to a fix

  • You're comfortable with ambiguity and growth-stage environments; you build process where there isn't one

  • You're data-literate — you use outcomes and KPIs to inform decisions, not just report on them

  • You're a steady, grounding presence in high-acuity clinical situations

  • You care deeply about the SMI population and bring a health equity lens to clinical practice

What You'll Have

  • Master's or doctoral degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related clinical field

  • Active, unrestricted California clinical license (LCSW, LMFT, LPCC, or Psychologist)

  • BBS-approved supervisor certification (or eligibility)

  • 8+ years of post-licensure clinical experience, with at least 3 years in a clinical leadership or supervisory role

  • Direct experience with PHP, IOP, or equivalent high-acuity behavioral health programs

  • Demonstrated experience managing multi-disciplinary clinical teams

  • Ability to work across multiple clinic sites throughout the Los Angeles Metro area

Nice to Have

  • Experience in a multi-site or regional clinical leadership role

  • Clinical background in SMI — schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar I, or treatment-resistant depression

  • Familiarity with Joint Commission accreditation requirements

  • Experience with measurement-based care frameworks and clinical data systems

  • Background in value-based or integrated care models

What We're Building

As a clinician at Amae, you are not adjacent to this work. You are essential to it.

  • A national care delivery model for the highest-acuity patients in behavioral health.

  • Precision medicine for SMI. Individualized treatment informed by multimodal clinical, behavioral, and social data.

  • A clinical operating system that puts longitudinal data, real-time patient signals, and purpose-built tools into a single decision layer for care teams.

  • Frontier science and measurement: defining and validating the outcomes frameworks that this field has never had. Hospitalizations avoided, days stable, functional improvement, and more.

  • A collaboration model with the country's leading health systems that proves coordinated SMI care can work at scale.

Compensation & Benefits

Amae Health is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The base salary range for this role is $175,000 – $215,000 annually, adjusted for market cost and individual qualifications. Compensation packages may include equity. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range.

If you want to practice at the top of your license, learn from the best in academic medicine, contribute to research that is defining a new field, and do it all inside a team that was actually built for this work, we'd like to talk.

What We Value

  • We center care in all we do. Empathy is not a brand value. It’s how we make clinical decisions, build products, and treat each other.

  • We challenge convention. The existing system is the problem. We question it, we test alternatives, and we move with urgency when something works.

  • We take the work seriously, not ourselves. High standards and humanity are not in tension. We hold a hard bar for quality while leaving room for humor and levity.

  • Your job isn’t done until the job is done. We close gaps, we follow through, and we don’t hide behind titles or org charts.

  • We win together and fail together. We own outcomes as a team. We learn fast. We don’t do blame.

  • We hustle with humility. Speed matters. So does integrity. We assume best intent and stay grounded in the mission.
