POSITION TITLE: Registered Nurse Oncology
LOCATION: Northtowns
REPORTS TO: Nurse Manager

JOB SUMMARY
Plans and provides nursing interventions for individuals with cancer and cancer related health care problems; treats human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as patient care, health teaching, and health counseling; executes medical regimens prescribed by a physician or other licensed health care provider authorized by the State of New York.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Follows orders written by a Physician, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant
- Administer chemotherapeutic agents
- Administer IV infusions including iron, hydration, and other injectable medications
- Assess lab results and vital signs
- Prepare chemotherapeutic agents following all safety standards including closed system access devices
- Prepare all medications following manufacturer guidelines
- Obtain vascular access via Peripheral IV, A-port or PICC line
- Patient education on discharge/post treatment
- Monitor and evaluate patients throughout infusion
- Draws blood for lab draws via peripherally or by venous access device
- Performs therapeutic phlebotomy per order
- Phone triage
- Adheres to all the regulatory requirements and professional standards such as ONS and QOPI safety standards as applicable to the specific area of nursing practice
- Performs nursing assessment that includes the holistic needs of each patient with consideration of his/her physiological, psychological, social, ethnic, cultural, educational and spiritual strengths and needs. Includes the patient and family and/or support system in the planning and delivery of care
- Ensures that patient safety is a priority goal in the delivery of healthcare
- Provides direct patient care activities with other professional disciplines to ensure that the plan of nursing intervention is consistent with and integrated with the total treatment plan
- Administers medications, IV fluids in a safe and efficient manner following established policies and procedures
- Demonstrates knowledge of and indications for dosage, route, action, side effects, contraindications, and adverse reactions of medication
- Provides health education/teaching for patients, their families, and/or designated significant others
- Confers with nursing staff and other members of the healthcare team regarding condition of patients and/or any unusual events or problems to ensure continuity of care
- Schedules patient appointments for treatment to include but not limited to, chemotherapy infusion, iron infusion, hydration, injections, etc.
- Adheres to the RPCI Oncology, PC standard for Employee Conduct

- Protects patient’s privacy, confidentiality, and their rights as health care consumers.
- Demonstrates an understanding of and is compliant with HIPAA regulations. Can define own level of access for minimum necessary requirements
- Complies with and is knowledgeable of Institute and department policies/procedures and standards of care
- Completes and maintains certification for the Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Course
- Acquires and/or maintains the necessary education and skills required to address competencies
- Attends/completes required mandatory in-services on an annual basis
- Attends education programs offered which have relevance to the special needs of assigned patient population, new products, equipment, policies/procedures, and clinical care
- Enhances professional growth and development by participating in educational programs, reading current literature, and participating in in-service meetings and workshops
- Attends meetings as required
- Other responsibilities as may be required and/or assigned

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
- The equivalent of one (1) year of fulltime oncology nursing experience (Preferred)
- Experience with EMR software (Medent/Onco/Allscripts/Soarian)
- Must have knowledge of Windows and Office software
CERTIFICATIONS/ LICENSES
- License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York
- OCN Certification Preferred

- Computer, scanner, phone systems, fax machine
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of the job employee is frequently required to sit, use hands or fingers to manipulate, touch or handle, reach with hands & arms, walk, stand, talk or hear. Occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and to lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a typical, busy outpatient clinic and environment is typical of any healthcare setting with possible daily exposure to chemotherapy drugs and agents. Material safety data sheets (MSDS) that include information on health hazards, acute exposure treatment, PPE, and spill procedures are accessible. The employee may occasionally be exposed to infectious diseases and transmission of airborne disease.
