Registered Nurse, Emergency Department, Full Time

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs rapid triage, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care in the emergency department setting.


• Provides direct nursing care to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.




• Demonstrates knowledge and ability to care for pediatric patients under supervision, including IV placement, lab collection, airway intervention, and weight-based medication administration.


• Demonstrates knowledge and ability to care for obstetric patients under supervision, including assisting with delivery, postpartum care, and newborn resuscitation.




• Recognizes and responds appropriately to emergency situations including trauma, cardiac, respiratory, neurological, psychiatric, and critical care emergencies.


• Initiates emergency interventions and protocols based on patient condition and physician/provider orders.


• Assists with procedures such as moderate sedation, hemodynamic monitoring, rhythm interpretation, and other complex tasks under supervision of the Emergency Department Physician or APP.


• Participates in life-saving measures including defibrillation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation with guidance from experienced staff.


• Administers medications, treatments, and procedures in accordance with hospital policy and scope of practice.




• Administers intravenous and oral medications as prescribed 




• Operates and monitors emergency and critical care equipment including cardiac monitors, defibrillators, infusion pumps, ventilators, and point-of-care testing equipment.


• Collaborates with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapy, EMS personnel, laboratory, radiology, and ancillary departments to coordinate patient care.


• Documents patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately and timely in the electronic medical record.


• Educates patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatments, discharge instructions, medications, and follow-up care.


• Prioritizes care for multiple patients simultaneously while maintaining patient safety and quality standards.


• Leads nursing response in trauma activations, code responses, stroke alerts, STEMI alerts, and disaster preparedness activities throughout the facility.


• Serves as a patient advocate and maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.


• May function as charge nurse, preceptor, or mentor as assigned.


• Participates in quality improvement initiatives, departmental education, competency validation, and continuing education.


• Works rotating schedules (variable hours, weekends, nights, holidays) to meet 24/7 care needs; maintains regular, reliable, punctual attendance.

Advanced Emergency Department Responsibilities

• Provides ongoing care and monitoring for critically ill or unstable patients held in the Emergency Department pending transfer or inpatient bed availability, including ICU hold patients requiring intensive monitoring and interventions.


• Manages patients requiring prolonged emergency department stays, including ventilated patients, vasoactive medication infusions, continuous cardiac monitoring, and other high-acuity care needs.


• Assesses, monitors, and safely manages patients presenting with psychiatric, behavioral health, substance use, suicidal, homicidal, or crisis-related conditions in accordance with hospital policies and safety protocols.


• Implements de-escalation techniques, suicide precautions, restraint protocols, and behavioral health safety measures as appropriate.


• Coordinates care with behavioral health providers, law enforcement, crisis teams, social services, and receiving facilities for psychiatric evaluation and disposition.


• Participates in interfacility transfer coordination including communication with receiving facilities, specialty providers, EMS agencies, and air medical transport services.


• Prepares patients for transfer by stabilizing patient condition, completing required documentation, communicating clinical reports, and ensuring continuity of care during transport.


• Collaborates with flight crews and transport teams during critical patient transfers and emergency transport operations.


• Demonstrates the ability to function effectively in resource-limited or rural emergency care environments where prolonged patient boarding and transfer delays may occur.

The ED RN may provide extended management of critically ill, behavioral health, or boarding patients while coordinating transfers to higher levels of care.

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.


• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment.


• Current BLS certification.


• Current ACLS certification


• Current PALS certification (or obtained within 6 months of hire).


• Current Neonatal Resuscitation(NRP) (or obtained within 6 months of hire).


• Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification (obtained within 6 months of hire).


• Emergency Nursing Core Course (ENPC) certification (obtained within 6 months of hire)


• Ability to work effectively in a high-stress, fast-paced environment.


• Strong communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).


• 1 year Med-Surg or ICU experience preferred.


• Emergency nursing experience preferred.


• Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) certification.


• Charge Nurse experience 


• Experience with electronic medical records and emergency department workflows.
