Under the general direction of the Director of Nurses and Clinical Services, and the Emergency Room Physician, the RN Staff Nurse leads the nursing team in the Emergency Department, provides direct and indirect patient care; supervises and provides direction of subordinates in accordance with The Joint Commission, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies and procedures. Staff member communicates with medical staff, other departments, and outside agencies while maintaining confidentiality. Position requires self-motivation, creativity, and capabilities to function in a semi-autonomous role within a fast paced and dynamic environment.
STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE
Ensures adherence to proper infection control, OSHA and safety standards.
Assess the condition of patients during triage and establish order of treatment.
Completes all nursing forms, uses abbreviations according to policy and procedure.
Able to correctly assess and interpret patient condition, symptoms, and reactions, and other data to form a nursing care needs and establish priorities.
Documents all necessary and pertinent patient information, treatment received, pain levels, present medications, reactions to treatments and medications given in the ED, etc.
Management of lacerations, head injuries, respiratory arrests, cardiac arrest, overdoses, burns, poisoning, trauma, drowning, bites, and psychiatric cases.
Assists in checking and stocking of all supplies and drugs used in the department and by paramedics, and for the inventory of drugs via the Pyxis.
Provides direct and indirect patient care.
Will provide patients with information on management and treatment of diseases, injuries, and conditions, drugs, etc.
Will report animal bites, vehicular accidents, abuse, and other suspicious injuries to the proper authorities.
Will assist in arranging transfers to other appropriate facilities.
Will provide nursing care as directed by the physician.
Administers IV fluids and blood products according to hospital policy.
Prepares patients for ordered procedures i.e., lab, radiology, etc.
Reviews home care and discharge instructions with patient prior to discharge and documents it.
Acts as the team leader to other Emergency Department staff and directs them as needed.
Must be able to set up and use all Emergency Department equipment, i.e., monitors, glucometers, stretchers, wheelchairs.
Must have the ability to splint, bandage, clean, and render other nursing care to patients.
Each shift will perform and record checks for monitors, defibrillators, etc. Will check and record refrigerator temperature at 7:00 a.m.
Any other duties assigned.
Requirements
Minimum Level of Education: Education level equivalent to completion of high school, and a completion of an accredited registered nursing program.
Formal Training: Registered Nursing program.
Licensure, Certification, Registration: Must have and maintain a State of Georgia Registered Nurses License, Basic Healthcare BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, and NIHSS certification. Or obtain within 3 months of employment. TNCC preferred
Work Experience: Preferred two (2) years of critical care or emergency nursing. EMT and Paramedic experience may be used to satisfy the 2 years of work experience preferred.
