Job Overview
A leading healthcare organization is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse Med-Surg to join its inpatient nursing team in Dixon, Illinois.
The Med-Surg RN will provide comprehensive nursing care to adult patients with a variety of acute medical conditions, including cardiac, respiratory, infectious, and renal diagnoses. The nurse will assess patient needs, administer medications and treatments, monitor clinical changes, coordinate care with the interdisciplinary team, and support patients and families throughout hospitalization and discharge planning.
Candidates must have at least one year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience. New graduates are not being considered for this position.
Responsibilities
Provide direct nursing care to Medical-Surgical patients according to established standards and care plans
Perform comprehensive patient assessments and ongoing reassessments
Monitor patients for changes in condition and initiate appropriate nursing interventions
Administer medications, IV therapies, and treatments according to physician orders
Provide care for patients with diagnoses such as:
NSTEMI
COPD
Pneumonia
Sepsis
Acute kidney injury
Other acute medical and surgical conditions
Monitor telemetry patients and review rhythm-strip documentation during the shift
Collaborate with monitor technicians regarding cardiac rhythm changes
Develop, implement, and update individualized nursing plans of care
Coordinate care with physicians, nursing leadership, respiratory therapy, PCTs, and other interdisciplinary team members
Educate patients and families regarding medications, diagnoses, treatment plans, and discharge instructions
Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
Prioritize care effectively in a fast-paced inpatient environment
Follow infection-control, patient-safety, and nursing practice standards
Participate in rotating weekend and holiday coverage
Float to ICU, Emergency Department, or behavioral health areas only when the nurse has appropriate experience and competency
Perform other nursing duties within scope of practice as assigned
Qualifications
Required
Current Registered Nurse license appropriate for practice in Illinois
Minimum of one year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience
Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification prior to start
Strong patient assessment and clinical decision-making skills
Ability to manage multiple patients and prioritize care effectively
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary healthcare team
Ability to work 12-hour night shifts
Availability for rotating weekends and holidays
Preferred
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
More than two years of acute-care nursing experience
Previous telemetry experience
ICU or Emergency Department experience
Experience caring for higher-acuity Medical-Surgical patients
Previous hospital-based RN experience
Department Information
Medical-Surgical inpatient units with:
23 beds on one floor
14 beds on an additional floor
Typical RN-to-patient ratio of approximately 1:5, with assignments occasionally reaching 1:6
Patient Care Technician coverage of approximately 1:8
Charge Nurse and House Supervisor support available
Telemetry monitoring available with monitor technicians reading rhythms; RNs review and sign off on strips
RNs are not routinely required to titrate critical-care drips
No routine on-call requirement
Low census may occur but is uncommon
Floating outside Med-Surg is based on the nurse's prior experience and demonstrated competency
Sign-On Bonus
Qualified candidates may be eligible for:
$10,000 sign-on bonus with a two-year commitment for nurses with approximately 1–2 years of experience
$15,000 sign-on bonus with a two-year commitment for nurses with 2+ years of experience
Relocation assistance may also be available and is discussed individually during the interview process.
