Job Overview

A healthcare organization in Show Low, Arizona, is seeking experienced Registered Nurse - Newborn Nursery Level II to join its maternal-newborn team.

The RN will provide specialized nursing care to newborns requiring Level II Special Care Nursery support, including infants who need closer monitoring or additional stabilization beyond routine newborn care.

The department includes an 8-bed Level II Special Care Nursery and supports approximately 900 births annually. Infants requiring a higher level of neonatal intensive care are stabilized and transferred by air to tertiary-care facilities in Phoenix.

This position is ideal for an RN with previous Special Care Nursery or NICU experience who is comfortable assessing newborns, recognizing early signs of deterioration, and responding appropriately to neonatal emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing care to newborns in the Level II Special Care Nursery
  • Perform comprehensive neonatal assessments and ongoing reassessments
  • Monitor vital signs, oxygenation, feeding tolerance, temperature regulation, and overall clinical status
  • Recognize changes in neonatal condition and initiate appropriate interventions
  • Provide stabilization and supportive care to premature or medically complex newborns within the Level II scope of care
  • Assist with neonatal resuscitation and emergency interventions when necessary
  • Administer medications, IV therapies, and treatments according to provider orders and established protocols
  • Provide feeding support, including specialized feeding plans for newborns requiring additional assistance
  • Monitor newborns for respiratory distress, hypoglycemia, jaundice, infection, and other common neonatal complications
  • Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, Labor & Delivery staff, and other members of the maternal-newborn care team
  • Support stabilization and coordination of transfer for infants requiring higher-acuity NICU services
  • Assist with preparation for air transport to tertiary neonatal centers when necessary
  • Educate parents and caregivers regarding newborn care, feeding, safety, and discharge instructions
  • Provide emotional support to families during neonatal hospitalization
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
  • Follow infection-control, neonatal safety, and medication-administration standards
  • Perform other newborn nursery and Special Care Nursery nursing responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

Required

  • Current Registered Nurse license or eligibility for Arizona licensure
  • Current Basic Life Support certification
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification
  • Current S.T.A.B.L.E. certification
  • Strong neonatal assessment and clinical decision-making skills
  • Ability to recognize and respond to changes in newborn condition
  • Ability to work 12-hour night shifts
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and family-education skills

Preferred

  • Two or more years of Special Care Nursery or NICU nursing experience
  • Previous Level II NICU or Special Care Nursery experience
  • Experience caring for premature or medically complex newborns
  • Experience stabilizing infants for transfer to higher-acuity NICU facilities
  • Previous neonatal emergency or transport preparation experience
