1. Assess patient care needs and gather information necessary to formulate a

5. The Nurse assesses and identifies new patient problems/concerns on an ongoing basis.

7. The Nurse implements a plan of care to facilitate the research study based on the individual protocol requirements.
8. The Nurse performs research procedures skillfully and adheres to protocol instructions.
9. The Nurse administers chemotherapy.
10. Nurse implements new methods of symptom treatment and monitors patients progress.
11. The Nurse explains, teaches, and reinforces patients’/families’ knowledge of study.
12. The Nurse evaluates the care plan’s effectiveness in meeting the changing health needs of the patient.  The Nurse demonstrates effective problem solving skills.
13. The Nurse communicates pertinent information in a positive and effective manner.
14. The Nurse coordinates clinical activities to ensure proper patient care. 
15. Acquires required supplies for collection of research data, obtaining specimens, and assisting in sample processing.
16. Collaborates with clinical investigators, protocol staff, and CRC staff to insure smooth implementation of protocol requirements.
17. Performs BLS and/or other specialized life support requirement designated by work area.
18. Provides in-service education and research orientation to bedside nursing.
19. Documents all procedures in the patient’s medical record.
20. Successful completion of annual competency testing.
21. Obtains specimens and performs simple laboratory processing procedures conforming to all policies and procedures related to specimen handling and processing.
22. Complies with all Ambulatory Services and Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative and clinical practice.  Complies with activities mandated by Joint Commission/Title 22.

1. Creates a professional and positive first impression for patients and referring physicians.  Demonstrates good judgment and common sense.
2. Greets patients with a smile, making eye contact and taking time to acknowledge each person individually during check in.
3. Addresses patient as Mr., Mrs. or Ms., as appropriate, unless requested by patient to use first name. 
4. At all times is focused on recognizing patients in need, whether in the CRS outpatient clinic or other areas of the hospital, offering assistance and a friendly word as appropriate. 
5. Consistently interacts personably and sensitively to patient, physician and employee needs.
6. Actively listens to patient concerns and utilizes service recovery amenities as appropriate. Assists patients with issues and complaints utilizing conflict management skills.
7. Identifies and communicates problems to the appropriate supervisor.
8. Shares pertinent information and observations with other health team members.
9. Notifies charge nurse of patient delays and service issues.  Acts as an advocate for patients to help facilitate punctuality in seeing patients according to schedule.

Sample Processing

1. Maintains accuracy of specimen collection into proper media, i.e., specific test-required preservative(s) and containers. 
2. Instructs participants on specific specimen-collection procedures to acquire saliva and urine.
3. Provides back-up processing support for specimens collected after-hours.
4. Initiates processing, including specimen centrifuging and aliquoting for associate labs according to both laboratory policies/procedures and research protocols.
5. Timely processing, temperature sensitivity, accurate pipetting and storage of specimens are essential.

1. Maintains and adheres to patient confidentiality and HIPAA guidelines including the distribution of NOPPs (Notice of Privacy Practices).
2. Demonstrates courtesy and overt helpfulness in all interactions.
3. Attends study start-up meetings for new protocols.
4. Participates in team building by actively contributing during meetings and with staff and providers in discussion of all practice activities.
5. Is an active participant in performance improvement projects and customer service initiatives.
6. Rotate to other CRS sites to provide back-up coverage as needed.
