REPORTS TO: Directly responsible to the rehab manager.
Workers Supervised: May supervise CPTAs, rehabilitation aids.
Interrelationships: Works cooperatively with all hospital departments.
JOB SUMMARY:
Organize and conduct medically prescribed physical therapy program in hospital and Intermediate Swing Bed (ISB) to restore function, prevent disability following disease, injury or loss of body part and help the patient reach maximum performance, and when possible, assume a place in society while learning to live within the limits of his/her capabilities.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Age Groups Served: Infants to geriatrics.
Job Duties:
- Assures compliance with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, continuous quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Cooperates with other hospital personnel to maintain good employee relations and meet all departmental objectives.
- Works with patients and families in providing explanations of diagnostic tests, etc.
- Communicates clearly and accurately with patients, families, physicians and co-workers.
- Completes appropriate paperwork in admission, dismissal or transfer of patients.
- Demonstrates sensitivity to patient’s comfort and privacy and expresses interest in the progress.
- Monitors emotional stability of patients and reports changes to physician or Registered Nurse.
- Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with hospital standards.
- Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment.
- Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, etc.
- Attends meetings as required.
- Plan therapy program for each patient, involving physical means, such as exercise, massage, heat, light and electricity as recommended by the therapist and/or prescribed by the physician, and to advise the physician of indications of non-prescribed treatment if any. Apply diagnostic, prognostic, muscle, nerve, joint and functional ability tests.
- Directs and aids patients in active and passive exercises, muscle re-education and gait training, utilizing pulleys, weights, steps and inclined surfaces.
- Makes use of available equipment and modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, iontophoresis, hydrocollator packs, traction and paraffin baths. Directs patients in care and use of wheelchair, braces, canes, crutches, prosthetic and orthopedic devices.
- Evaluates, records and reports patient progress for review by other members of the plan of care
team of the hospital. May conduct or participate in training medical and nursing personnel in
physical therapy techniques and objectives.
- All other duties as assigned.
Typical Working Conditions: -Occasionally exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases.
-Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances.
-Occasionally exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries,
illness, etc).
-Subject to varying and unpredictable situations.
-May perform emergency care.
-Possibility of cuts or burns from equipment.
-Possibility of strains due to lifting or aiding patients.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience: Physical Therapy experience preferred.
Education: B.S. or higher degree in physical therapy from accredited institution
offering training in the specialty.
Req. Cert/Registration: Currently licensed in the state of Kansas.
