FLSA Status: Non-Exempt


Job Type: Full-Time


Position Summary


The Rehabilitation Technician (Tech) plays a vital role in delivering structured, safe, and compassionate care to clients enrolled in substance use disorder (SUD) and co-occurring behavioral health treatment programs. This position supports clinical and operations teams by facilitating daily routines, providing transportation, ensuring client safety, and promoting recovery through adherence to policies, therapeutic engagement, and trauma-informed approaches.

This role complies with CARF standards for staffing, client safety, recordkeeping, and behavioral health support, as well as applicable guidelines from the New Mexico Health Care Authority (NM HCA), OSHA, ADA, and EEOC.


Essential Responsibilities


Client Support & Engagement



  • Facilitate client daily activities according to program structure and client lifecycle and scheduled routines.

  • Provide supervision during programming, meals, and free time in a recovery-oriented environment.

  • Transport clients to clinical, medical, legal, and 12-step appointments.

  • Provide supportive engagement and de-escalation during moments of client distress.

  • Conduct orientations and facility admissions in compliance with Zia Recovery Center protocols.

  • Supervise self-administration of medications after completion of required training and competency demonstration.


Monitoring, Safety & Compliance



  • Conduct hourly facility checks and monitor the safety and security of all spaces and clients.

  • Administer and document urine drug screenings and breathalyzer tests following appropriate chain-of-custody procedures.

  • Ensure physical upkeep of units and communal areas (cleaning, trash disposal, staging).

  • Perform vehicle safety inspections prior to use; report maintenance needs promptly.


Communication & Documentation



  • Submit accurate and timely shift reports and behavioral observations using Lightning Step EHR.

  • Read and respond to staff communications at the beginning and end of shifts.

  • Complete incident reports, admission paperwork, and discharge summaries as directed.

  • Attend monthly staff meetings, trainings, and case discussions.


Emergency & Incident Response



  • Follow emergency response protocols precisely, including medical events, elopements, and psychiatric crises.

  • Immediately notify Operations Management if a client expresses intent to leave against medical or therapeutic advice.

  • Assist with crisis intervention as trained and within the scope of authority.


Minimum Qualifications



  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree in Behavioral Health, Social Work, or related field preferred.

  • One (1) year experience in a behavioral health, substance use, or recovery support role required.

  • Minimum one (1) year of continuous sobriety if in recovery.

  • Valid New Mexico driver’s license with clear driving record.

  • Must pass background checks and pre-employment drug screening in accordance with NM state law.

  • Basic proficiency in electronic documentation and communication systems.• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.



Competencies & Skills



  • Familiarity with 12-step and peer recovery models.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and uphold confidentiality standards (HIPAA).

  • Team-oriented with the ability to take initiative.

  • Training or certification in trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, or de-escalation preferred (can be completed post-hire).


Physical Demands & Work Environment



  • Able to lift up to 20 lbs. and perform physical duties such as walking, standing, bending, and occasional outdoor work.

  • Regular exposure to high-stress behavioral health situations requiring emotional regulation and critical thinking.

  • Reasonable accommodations provided in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).


Professional Development



  • Monthly supervision (if pursuing licensure)

  • In-house training: trauma-informed care, recovery support, CPR/First Aid, and crisis response
