Release of Information (ROI) Specialist Job Description

Job Summary
Responsible for accurately maintaining physical and electronic patient records, assisting patients and outside facilities with the transfer of records, and importing records into electronic health record in accordance with HIPAA regulations and policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- The Release of Information Specialist is responsible for processing all record requests, specifically medical record and imaging requests, in a timely and efficient manner
- Manages all requests and inquiries for patient heath information; validates HIPAA compliant authorization; ensures requesting party has legal right to patient information; dispenses patient health information with accountability to all regulatory entities and according to the facility’s policies and procedures, maintains facility established turn around times for record releases
- Observe confidentiality and safeguards all patient-related information and verifies that all releases of information and other PHI forms are in accordance with HIPAA and other regulations
- Maintains current knowledge related to applicable statutes, regulations, guidelines, and standards necessary to perform job duties
- Process medical record requests using specialized software
- Communicate with staff members, departments, outside vendors/facilities as necessary
- Contributes to the morale and teamwork of the staff and facility; displays a positive attitude and patient-minded vision with customer/client satisfaction as the goal
- Maintains level of productivity as established for the department
- Monitors work queues to ensure timely processing of requests
- Assists in other duties as designated by the Medical Records Manager and/or Supervisor
Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum high school diploma, Associates Degree preferred
- Ability to perform team-oriented job tasks with a conscientious awareness of detail and accuracy; effective organizational skills; ability to multi-task effectively
- Strong customer service skills
- Effective communication skills (verbal and written)
- Ability to read and comprehend general healthcare terminology
- Competent use of email, fax machines, copiers, Word, and Excel applications required
- Prior experience with EHR/PACs platforms preferred
- Available to work M-F 8:00am - 4:30pm
Performance Standards
Medical Records Specialists are expected to perform well in a team environment, also possessing the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. The expectation is that the needs of the patient are always the priority. They report directly to the Medical Records Manager.
Hourly rate: $18-$22
