Job Description - Crisis Hotline Volunteer

As a Crisis Hotline volunteer, you contribute directly to our mission by answering crisis calls and providing essential support to the Crisis Hotline team. Your role is instrumental in ensuring that our vital services are available 24/7 to support individuals in need by providing callers with immediate support in a non-judgmental, trauma informed approach through crisis intervention, safety planning, education, community resources, risk assessment, and information.



*Please note as a Crisis Hotline Volunteer, all volunteers must go through the Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault training.



The training is scheduled for Monday, September 29th through Friday, October 10th, 2025. 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.


Training will be on site at 2250 Benton Drive, Redding, CA 96001.



Upon successful completion, participants will become Certified DV/SA Counselors as outlined by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES).



Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Respond to incoming calls on the crisis hotline promptly and professionally

  • Provide immediate crisis intervention and support, offering coping strategies and resources as appropriate

  • Assess the nature and severity of the caller’s crisis to determine appropriate support and intervention

  • Satisfactory completion of One Safe Place’s domestic violence and sexual assault crisis intervention training (pre-volunteer requirement)

  • Complete required documentation after crisis calls



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Ability to listen attentively and empathetically to callers, allowing them to express their feelings and concerns without judgment

  • Ability to assess and support callers

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure

  • Empathy and compassion towards individuals in distress and respect for diversity

  • Willingness to adhere to confidentiality guidelines and organizational protocols



Education and Experience:



  • Previous experience in crisis intervention, counseling, or related fields is desirable

  • Knowledge of mental health issues and crisis management techniques preferred



Physical Requirements:



  • Volunteers need sufficient hearing ability to accurately receive and understand verbal communication from callers, which may include varying tones, volumes, and accents



Additional Volunteer Information:



  • Duties are primarily remote, with the occasional in-office training. Must be located in Shasta County or surrounding area

  • All volunteers must have a reliable phone and stable internet connection



ADA Characteristics


The environment is primarily a work from home opportunity with some in an office training and meetings. Local travel (driving) may be required to attend off-site meetings, as needed. Lift and carry 25 lbs., extend both arms above the head and/or reach below the waist, stoop, squat, crawl, bend the back or open lower-level filing drawers, or to retrieve stored items, climb a ladder or stairs, or use an elevator. Sit frequently and/or stand when filing, using copier, etc. Use fine manipulation (hands and wrist) to operate a keyboard, take notes; utilize desk calculator, file and copy documents. Corrected vision to normal range. Speak in normal vocal tone and range and communicate clearly and concisely to others. Apply normal reasoning and detail as required in the accomplishment of job duties.
