Description

Are you passionate about nonprofit donor relations, fundraising, and communications in order to better serve our neighbors experiencing homelessness? If so, Tacoma Rescue Mission (TRM) is seeking a Director of Development to be a part of carrying out our mission. Purpose and Vision Statement

The Tacoma Rescue Mission (TRM) is a faith-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to support all people - including clients, volunteers, community partners, and staff - to become their best. We provide emergency services such as shelter and meals to neighbors experiencing homelessness. We offer supportive housing and addiction recovery programs that promote self-sufficiency, sustainable transformation, and stability. We share our Christian faith within a loving and inclusive community.

Job Purpose

  

Provides strategic direction and oversight of TRM’s comprehensive fundraising, donor relations, and external communications efforts. Supports organizational sustainability through the development and execution of annual and long-term fundraising goals. Serves as a key member of the Community Engagement leadership team to ensure alignment between development activities and the Mission’s overall goals, vision, and values. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops and leads TRM’s fundraising strategies, including individual giving, major gifts, planned giving, grants, events, corporate partnerships, and capital campaigns.
  • Supervises the development team and provides direction, support, and performance management to ensure departmental goals are met or exceeded.
  • Personally manages a portfolio of major donors ($10,000+) and prospects, including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Ensures fundraising plans are aligned with TRM’s budget, mission priorities, and programmatic needs through collaboration with executive leadership and department heads.
  • Oversees all donor communication efforts and external marketing in coordination with the Marketing and Communications team, ensuring consistency of message and brand.
  • Identifies and leverages donor data and CRM systems to assess performance and guide future strategies.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with external stakeholders including donors, foundations, businesses, churches, civic groups, and community leaders.
  • Collaborates with the Senior Director of Community Engagement and the Executive Director to cultivate strategic partnerships and inspire philanthropy.
  • Provides guidance and oversight for all development-related events, ensuring they are mission-focused and meet financial targets.
  • Participates in leadership team meetings to inform, align, and support cross-functional organizational initiatives.
  • Embodies the values that form our culture to meet the organization’s mission of sharing God’s love, hope, and support with our neighbors in need to uplift communities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support others and ensure an efficient and effective work environment.

Working Conditions

  

Office environment; may include occasional evening/weekend events; local travel required to meet with donors and partners; hybrid work schedule available.

Normal business hours with occasional evenings/weekends for events and donor engagement.

Requirements

  • Proven track record in fundraising, with 7–10 years of progressive experience in nonprofit development, including managing major donor relationships and leading teams.
  • Skilled in planning and managing development strategies, building donor pipelines, and achieving fundraising targets.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and storytelling skills; able to inspire and engage donors across diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of fundraising tools and donor databases, Salesforce experience a plus.
  • Passion for TRM’s Christian mission and ability to authentically represent the organization’s faith-based values in internal and external communications.
  • Demonstrated experience working with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Able to approach development work through a trauma-informed, person-first, and grace-based lens.
  • Skilled in collaboration, staff supervision, and team development.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills; able to adapt to changing conditions with agility.
  • May attend evening and weekend meetings, events, and conferences.
  • Access to a vehicle for frequent travel throughout Pierce County and TRM locations.

Certifications & Licensures

  • CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Stationary position 75% of the time.
  • Occasionally moves about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Occasionally lifts and moves boxes weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Communicates clearly to convey TRM’s mission and donor engagement strategy.
