About Us

Since 1871, The Salt Lake Tribune has been Utah's independent voice, sharing stories others can’t or won’t. We uncover how power operates, highlight solutions to community challenges, and provide essential information to Utahns.

The Tribune was the first legacy newspaper to transition to nonprofit status, in 2019. As a community-supported organization, we report with a public service focus, amplifying unheard voices. We collaborate with news outlets statewide to strengthen Utah's information ecosystem, ensuring our reporting reaches Utahns wherever they are.

Position Overview

When Mormon pioneers arrived in Utah, they were in search of a place they could live their faith uninterrupted. Thanks to the hard work of many Utahns, we’re nearly 200 years into this experiment and the Beehive State has blossomed, welcoming Latter-day Saints and non-Latter-day Saints. This growth is particularly apparent in Utah County, home to 720,000 people (this population will double by 2065).

The Tribune has long been a leader in statewide faith coverage. There is a gap, however, in Utah County, which is home to church-owned Brigham Young University and where faith influences culture, education, local business and government. As the Faith in Utah County reporter, you will fill a critical need, while at the same time serving as part of a three-person faith reporting team. Mentorship opportunities are strong, with two experienced, successful faith reporters and a dedicated editor on the team.

You will share stories about how The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints impacts culture, business and government locally and statewide. From how Latter-day Saints are steering Utah County’s most successful technology and multilevel marketing companies to BYU’s dominance to Mormon mom influencers, there are many opportunities to tell thoughtful and interesting stories.

Competitive compensation: Salary range from $55,000-$65,000, commensurate with experience.

• Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field.
• Three to five years of experience working at a news organization. Knowledge and use of Associated Press style are required.
• A knowledge of Latter-day Saints, their beliefs, cultures and trends, along with a desire to deepen that understanding and share those stories with readers far and wide who follow Tribune coverage of this global faith.
• An understanding of whom we are trying to reach at the start of all reporting efforts.
• An understanding of audience engagement across social platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, YouTube, etc.
• Demonstrable ability to report and write articles, including headlines, SEO headlines, etc. 
• Strong organizational skills, paired with independent work and judgment, as well as the ability to collaborate with other Tribune journalists.
• Maintaining a schedule that allows for both quick-turn stories and the ability to work on longer-term projects.
• Eagerness to engage with readers, including via in-person events.
• Participate in training sessions offered and seek learning opportunities.
• Commitment to representing the diversity of our communities in coverage.
• Knowledge of Utah County is a plus.
