Health Systems Clinical Specialist Sr.

This position requires informatics and terminology standards expertise. This is not a medical billing or coding position.
Responsibilities of the Health Systems Clinical Specialist Sr.:
- Provide support for managing clinical data sets and clinical workflows used to define specific use cases in preventing and managing chronic diseases.
- Develop programs for data extraction, data sets, and reports for performing gap analysis of terminology standards and health data standards for clinical reminder taxonomies.
- Support the development, evaluation, refinement, and maintenance of coded value sets used for building taxonomies in clinical reminders and templates to enhance quality of care for patients.
- Review, refine, and update multiple clinical and health data domain specific taxonomies to ensure accurate classification and organization of data.
- May work on cross-functional agile teams to support new clinical applications and product offerings, including analysis, design/build, development, testing, implementation, deployment/roll out, maintenance, quality assurance, troubleshooting, and/or upgrading existing clinical systems.
- May develop reports and documents on project/task order activities including project design, methodology, findings or results, and recommendations based upon data analysis.
- May work with developers and agile teams in the development and implementation of clinical reminder templates, clinical documentation templates, clinical pathways, performance measurements, and protocols in the electronic health record system.
- Perform data mapping of source terms to target terminology standards and data messaging standards for data exchange and integration with other healthcare information systems or third-party applications.
- Gather and document business requirements, clinical workflow processes, and system configuration focused on improving quality of care, clinical outcomes, system efficiencies, and patient safety.
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), internal process documents, business rules, reference guides, and other documents as required by the customer.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists and domain experts, to understand specific requirements and design effective NLP-based data processing solutions.
- Provide ongoing project statuses and updates to customers utilizing dashboards, presentations, graphs, and delivering predefined deliverable documents to the client.
- Identify complex health data issues, key policy issues and priorities, root cause analysis, workflow inefficiencies, design failures, alternative strategies, propose recommendations to program managers and customers.
- Perform additional activities and tasks as needed to accomplish customer request or other project objectives/goals.
Project Requirements:
- Experience with VA EHR platforms CPRS, VistA, and Oracle Cerner Millennium is desired..
- Experience in Agile methodology, Scrum framework, and Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is desired.
- Experience with VA EHR platforms CPRS, VistA, or Oracle Health / Cerner Millennium.
- Responsible for evaluating, creating, and maintaining data dictionaries, controlled vocabularies, schema governance, and data model for taxonomy management system.
- Demonstrate strong written communication through the creation of technical and process documents
- Analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex clinical data and identify areas for improvement.
- Familiarity with common data analysis tools and platforms (e.g., SQL, Python, R).
- Prior working experience and in-depth knowledge of terminology and data standards (SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm, HL7, FHIR, CDA) and coding/classification systems (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, HEDIS measures), ontologies (OWL), and natural language processing (NLP).
Skills and Qualifications:
- 5 - 9 years' experience required for this role.
- Prior clinical experience and background in healthcare is required.
- Experience working with the Department of Veterans Affairs is preferred.
- Strong application of informatics principles and computer skills for complex clinical data analysis
- Excellent detail skills required
- Must be able to understand complex verbal instructions, independently research solutions, and deliver on tight deadlines
- Able to multitask and handle multiple priorities with a calm, positive attitude, and professional manner.
- Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form.
- Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter and be able to work with all types of personnel with a professional attitude.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with stakeholders and present complex ideas and solutions in a clear and concise manner.
Educational Requirements:
- A master’s degree or bachelor’s plus 2 years relevant experience, or associate’s + 4 years relevant experience is required in Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, or related scientific discipline such as Health Informatics, Computer Science, Computer Programming, or Information Systems.
Educational Equivalents:
A bachelor's degree plus 2 years' experience may be used as an equivalent to a master's degree or an associate degree plus 4 years' experience may be used as an equivalent to a master's.
