Job Description - Hotline Staff Position

Job Announcement

Position Title: Hotline Attorney or Legal Paraprofessional
FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports To: Hotline Supervising Attorney
Work Arrangement: Hybrid/Remote
Salary Range: $70,000–$110,000, depending on experience

Organization

Justice North is a nonprofit civil legal aid organization providing free legal services to low-income individuals across northern Minnesota. Formed through the merger of Legal Aid Service of Northeastern Minnesota and Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota, Justice North serves clients in both urban and rural communities with a commitment to equity, dignity, and access to justice. We provide a full range of poverty law services and partner closely with community organizations, courts, and service providers to help clients achieve safety, stability, and long-term solutions to legal problems.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The Hotline staff plays a critical role in ensuring eligible clients receive timely, high-quality legal assistance. This position is responsible for being available during telephone hotline hours to accept warm handoffs from intake staff and to immediately provide appropriate brief legal advice to clients.

In this role, the hotline staff assesses client needs and applies current case priorities to triage matters for acceptance and determine the appropriate level of service. Hotline staff provide brief legal advice across multiple common areas of poverty law while adhering to written hotline practice standards related to client communication, professionalism, quality of advice, and timely case closure. Hotline staff manage their own cases and do not have assigned paralegal support.

In addition to direct client work, the hotline staff participates in clinics, outreach, and legal education activities as directed, and attends required trainings, meetings, and organizational activities. Regular and timely attendance is essential to successfully carrying out all job duties.

Qualifications

Candidates for this position must meet one of the following professional qualifications. Attorneys must be licensed to practice law in Minnesota or be a candidate for admission to the Minnesota Bar. Paraprofessional candidates must be rostered under the Minnesota Judicial Branch’s Legal Paraprofessional Roster and approved to practice in family law matters involving domestic abuse, child abuse, Orders for Protection (OFPs), and Harassment Restraining Orders (HROs) under Minnesota Supervised Practice Rule 12 and its appendix.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work effectively with survivors of domestic violence and with low-income, disabled, and marginalized communities. Experience or training in trauma-informed practice is strongly preferred. Two to three years of experience providing legal advice directly to clients is also preferred.

This role requires exceptional telephone communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with professionalism, respect, and collegiality. Candidates must be able to quickly analyze situations, spot legal issues, and exercise strong professional judgment. Successful applicants will also demonstrate the ability to learn new areas of law, adapt to new technologies, and navigate evolving processes.

The position requires the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, manage competing demands efficiently, and remain composed under pressure. Strong technology aptitude and overall technical competence are essential for success in this role.

Working Conditions

This position is primarily remote with occasional required in-person office days for trainings and meetings.

Compensation and Benefits

Justice North offers a competitive salary based on experience, with a range of $70,000–$110,000, and an excellent benefits package that includes health, dental, life, and disability insurance; a 403(b) retirement plan; exceptionally generous paid time off; paid federal holidays; and relocation assistance for candidates who choose to move to the region.

How to Apply

Please submit a cover letter and resume through BambooHR by February 27th, 2025.  Justice North is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace.
