Job Description - Mechanicial Lead

SUMMARY

Northline Seafoods is a growing seafood processing company looking for an experienced and motivated Mechanical Lead. The Mechanical Lead is responsible for assisting the Chief Engineer and engineering team in ensuring the efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of critical equipment aboard the barge. This position plays a key role in troubleshooting and servicing mechanical systems, ensuring minimal downtime and compliance with safety and operational standards. This position will be aboard the barge in Bristol Bay, AK for 70+ days per year with the possibility of year round employment assisting with the further processing of salmon in Bellingham. As we grow, we’re looking for an all-hands-on-deck perspective.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Oversee and perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of onboard mechanical systems, including but not limited to: diesel generators, refrigeration systems, pumps and motors, HVAC systems, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, reverse osmosis (RO) water-making systems, and emergency and deck equipment.
  • Assist in planning and executing preventive and corrective maintenance programs to ensure equipment reliability and longevity.
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and documentation of all repairs, inspections, and maintenance activities.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to diagnose mechanical failures and develop solutions to optimize system performance.
  • Monitor spare parts inventory and coordinate with the Chief Engineer to requisition necessary supplies.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with safety regulations, environmental policies, and operational protocols.
  • Train and guide junior crew members in mechanical system operation and maintenance as needed.
  • Respond to emergency repairs and system failures to minimize operational disruptions.
  • All other duties as assigned.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven experience in mechanical maintenance and repair, preferably in a marine or industrial setting.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, refrigeration, hydraulics, and other mechanical systems listed above.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and engineering blueprints.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and diagnostics of complex mechanical systems.
  • Strong documentation skills for maintenance records and reporting.
  • Ability to work in a remote, offshore environment for extended periods.
  • Certifications in relevant mechanical trades or marine engineering are preferred.
  • Ability to develop, implement and train staff in safety protocols, with particular emphasis on ABS and USCG regulations.
  • Clearly communicate both verbally and in writing with the maintenance staff and contractors.
  • Ability to solve problems and make clear rational decisions in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to work 12+ hour days 7 days per week over a 70+ day season.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds individually, or up to 100 pounds with assistance.

The Mechanical Lead position operates primarily on a barge at sea in Bristol Bay, AK during the season with the possibility of off-season responsibilities aboard the vessel in Bellingham, WA. This role routinely runs the general infrastructure and power generation systems as well as the maintenance of these systems aboard the vessel. Employee must be able to stand, walk and generally navigate a barge setting in a wet and cold environment for long periods of time. Ability to lift 50 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
