We are seeking an experienced Medical Director – Behavioral Health to provide clinical leadership and medical oversight for our behavioral health programs. This is a flexible, fully remote contractor position ideal for a psychiatrist with leadership experience who is passionate about supporting clinicians, improving quality of care, and ensuring compliance with state and federal standards.
Position Summary
The Medical Director serves as the organization's physician leader and provides medical oversight for behavioral health services. Working collaboratively with executive leadership and clinical staff, the Medical Director helps ensure that services are delivered in accordance with evidence-based practices, professional standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
This role focuses on clinical leadership, quality improvement, risk management, and provider consultation rather than routine administrative duties. The Medical Director supports the organization's mission by promoting high standards of psychiatric care, strengthening clinical practices, and contributing to the continued development of behavioral health programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clinical and medical oversight for Americare Behavioral Health LLC's outpatient behavioral health services.
- Serve as the organization's designated Medical Director and ensure compliance with applicable Massachusetts, federal, payer, and accreditation requirements.
- Provide consultation and clinical guidance to psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, therapists, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Promote the use of evidence-based psychiatric and behavioral health practices throughout the organization.
- Review and assist in developing clinical policies, procedures, protocols, and practice guidelines to enhance quality and patient safety.
- Participate in quality assurance, peer review, utilization review, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Review critical incidents, clinical concerns, and risk management issues, providing recommendations for corrective actions and system improvements.
- Monitor clinical quality indicators and identify opportunities to improve access, efficiency, and patient outcomes.
- Collaborate with executive leadership on program development, strategic planning, and clinical operations.
- Participate in leadership meetings and provide medical expertise on organizational initiatives.
- Support clinical staff through mentorship, education, and case consultation as needed.
- Assist with licensing reviews, audits, accreditation activities, and payer compliance requirements.
- Foster collaborative relationships with referral sources, healthcare partners, and community organizations when appropriate.
- Stay current with evolving behavioral health regulations, clinical guidelines, and best practices.
Qualifications
Required
- Doctor of Medicine (MD)
- Board Certification in Psychiatry.
- Active, unrestricted Massachusetts medical license.
- Minimum of five (5) years of post-residency clinical psychiatric experience.
- Previous experience providing clinical leadership, supervision, or medical oversight in a behavioral health setting.
- Experience in outpatient behavioral health services.
- Strong knowledge of psychiatric treatment, behavioral health regulations, and healthcare compliance.
- Professional liability (malpractice) insurance.
Preferred
- Experience serving as a Medical Director, Associate Medical Director, or similar physician leadership role.
- Familiarity with MassHealth, commercial insurance, and behavioral health documentation requirements.
- Experience with quality improvement, utilization management, and risk management initiatives.
- Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary behavioral health teams.
- Familiarity with electronic health record systems, preferably ICANotes.
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies
- Comprehensive knowledge of psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment.
- Strong understanding of Massachusetts behavioral health regulations, payer requirements, and clinical compliance standards.
- Knowledge of quality improvement methodologies, risk management, and clinical governance.
- Ability to provide effective clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to address complex clinical issues.
