OAW’s medical and surgical services are complemented by PA’s, nurses, and other health professionals.          

Summary of Role

Provide real-time interpretation services between patients and healthcare providers via video or phone.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate clear and accurate communication, preserving the tone, context, and meaning of the original message.
  • Specialize in medical terminology and healthcare settings (e.g., doctor visits, procedures, discharge instructions).
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Remain calm, impartial and professional during high-stress or emotionally charged situations.
  • Maintain schedule outlining availability and respond promptly to interrupter requests.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; related degree is helpful
  • Certification would be helpful--Medical Assistant, Athletic Trainer, Ortho Technician, etc.

Experience:

  • 1 year directly related experience interpreting in a medical environment

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to speak one or more languages in addition to English
  • Able to take initiative, work under pressure, multitask, and maintain an efficient workflow
  • Able to strictly maintain confidentiality and privacy of the patients
  • Cooperative and professional toward patients, peers, providers, management, and visitors
  • Detailed orientated with excellent organizational skills
  • Flexible, reliable, and able to demonstrate sound judgment 
  • Proficient knowledge of medical anatomy and terminology
  • Strong communication skills including verbal and listening
  • Able to work with team members in an autonomous, responsible, and ethical manner
  • Team player with excellent customer service skills
