Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by personnel assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

1. Responsible for reviewing and resolving charge capture, coding, and revenue integrity checks in laboratory workqueues.
2. Ensures the implementation of frequent changes to comply with changing American Medical Association (AMA), payor requirements and HSCRC methodology.
3. Responsible for keeping abreast with Local Medical Review policies and Medicare bulletins.
4. Responsible for coding all new and miscellaneous tests for appropriate reimbursement and compliance with federal and state regulations according to established ICD-10 diagnosis coding and CPT-4 procedure coding. 
5. Accountabliity for performing manual charge entry for billing miscellaneous laboratory tests.
6. Answers coding questions for laboratory personnel, physician offices and nursing homes.
7. Communicates billing and charge capture issues to hospital operational stakeholders timely, providing clear details.
8. Independently troubleshoots and resolves problems, documents corrective actions and provides training to prevent reoccurrence of issue.
9. Responsible for making decisions regarding charge adjustments and other charge resolution techniques.
10. Responds to clinical and customer concerns, independently resolves customer issues in a confidential manner, employing integrity and discretion.
11. Completes all tasks and special projects in a timely manner with accurate documentation.
12. Develop reporting metrics around productivity, denials, write-offs and communicates to laboratory director.
13. Meets with laboratory stakeholders at least monthly to discuss reports, metrics and improvements.
14. Attends and participates in in-service training and various educational programs for professional growth and development as it relates to laboratory billing and reimbursement.

Education/Experience/Certifications:    

1.     Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, biology or related sciences and 2 years of clinical laboratory experience. Clinical Laboratory experience can be counted toward the degree requirement* as follows:

• Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, biology or related sciences with 5 years’ clinical laboratory experience (3 years’ experience counted as education*) OR
• Completion of Military Laboratory Technician program with 5 years’ clinical laboratory experience (3 years’ experience counted as education*) OR
• 8 years of clinical laboratory experience (6 years’ experience counted as education*)

*Experience used to satisfy the education requirement should not also be counted again toward a candidate’s experience assessment. (i.e. Experience should not be double counted.)

2.     3 years of experience working with CPT, HCPCS and revenue codes for accuracy and compliance with all state and federal guidelines is required (may be gained as part of the requirements in the preceding bullet).

3.     Epic EMR experience is preferred.

4.     AAPC or AHIMA certification is preferred.

Licensure/Certifications:  

• ASCP or equivalent preferred.

Pay Range: $36.83-$55.29
