Job Description - Meteorologist

Summary



This position serves as a Meteorologist and is responsible for analyzing, interpreting, and forecasting meteorological conditions, maintaining climatological records, and providing accurate and timely information to support emergency response, safety, and operational planning. The position requires both independent work and coordination with contractors, managers, and other stakeholders to ensure the safe and efficient operation of site activities.



Essential Duties



  • Coordinate and communicate with Hanford Site contractors and customers to provide timely meteorological information.

  • Develop and perform quality assurance and control checks on incoming and outgoing meteorological data.

  • Operate the Meteorological and Climatological Services computer and data network.

  • Maintain comprehensive climatological records for use in post-accident analysis, dose reconstruction, environmental impact assessments, and building design.

  • Provide real-time meteorological data and forecasts to support emergency response for fires, radiological events, or chemical releases.

  • Issue heat stress information and other weather-related advisories to request contractors.

  • Distribute meteorological and climatological information in support of cleanup and operational activities (e.g., building demolition, reactor compartment transport, construction projects, and tank vapor studies).

  • Operate specialized systems including the Met Viewer data display and the Air Pollutant Graphical Environmental Modeling System (APGEMS).

  • Analyze and interpret data from surface monitoring stations, satellites, radar, and weather maps to predict short- and long-range atmospheric conditions.

  • Prepare and present daily forecasts, briefings, and reports for contractors, managers, and stakeholders.

  • Produce weather maps, graphics, and reports using computer graphic equipment.

  • Issue weather advisories, warnings, and alerts for severe or hazardous conditions.



Specialized Experience:




  • Demonstrated ability to analyze meteorological data and communicate effectively in oral and written formats.

  • Experience preparing short- and long-term weather forecasts.

  • Proficiency in computer-based meteorological data management and modeling tools.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, including during shifts and emergency conditions.



Education:




  • BS/Master’s degree in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, or related discipline.

  • 8+ years of experience in meteorological data collection and analysis.



  • Degree in science, environmental science, atmospheric science, meteorology, or related field required.

  • Advanced coursework or graduate degree in meteorology or climatology preferred.



Conditions of Employment:



  • U.S. Citizenship required.

  • Background investigation required.

  • May be required to work rotating shifts and remain on-call for emergency response.
