About This Position


CMI is seeking a motivated Health and Safety Consultant to support the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, with a primary focus on PennDOT, as part of the Office of Administration’s Safety Program. This hybrid position includes telework, office-based work at PennDOT locations, and occasional site visits. The ideal candidate may reside anywhere in Pennsylvania but must be willing and able to travel to Harrisburg as needed and conduct in-person training sessions within their designated region. Reliable personal transportation is required.


Key Responsibilities



  • Utilize the PennDOT safety action plan to help set timelines, assign responsibilities, and monitor progress on safety initiatives.

  • Develop and deliver health and safety trainings in both in-person and virtual formats, using existing materials or creating new content as necessary.

  • Conduct assessments and audits in accordance with the Accident and Illness Prevention Program (AIPP) and PennDOT policies, including AIPP reviews.

  • Analyze injury and illness data, prepare technical reports, and provide practical safety recommendations in response to identified trends.

  • Provide general support in areas such as injury and illness prevention, industrial hygiene practices, and compliance with AIPP standards.

  • Operate independently to deliver on-site health and safety assistance.

  • Adjust to client needs and build effective relationships through dependable service and strong communication.

  • Work with personnel at all organizational levels to promote a positive safety culture and improve overall safety awareness.

  • Travel to PennDOT worksites within your assigned region, as needed.


Requirements and Experience



  • A combination of the following:

    • An AIPP Qualification with less than two years of occupational safety experience, or

    • An AIPP Qualification with two or more years of occupational safety experience, or

    • Two or more years of occupational safety experience while actively working toward an AIPP Qualification.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).


Education and Certifications



  • AIPP Qualification (or in progress, as outlined above).


Other Requirements



  • Must be able to travel throughout Pennsylvania, including periodic travel to Harrisburg.

  • Must possess reliable personal transportation for travel to various PennDOT worksites.

  • Hybrid position with remote work, PennDOT office attendance, and on-site presence required based on agency needs.

  • Ability to work independently and flexibly while maintaining professionalism in a collaborative team environment.


Physical Requirements



  • Ability to drive for extended periods to various PennDOT locations across Pennsylvania.

  • Must be able to sit for long durations during travel or office tasks.

  • Frequent walking and standing during assessments, inspections, and training sessions.

  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, and crawling to inspect work environments or equipment.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds (e.g., training supplies, safety materials).

  • May need to climb stairs or ladders depending on site configurations.

  • Capable of working in diverse indoor and outdoor settings, potentially exposed to weather, noise, and uneven terrain.
