About the Opportunity

A rapidly growing mortgage technology company is looking for an Underwriting Manager to lead and develop a high-performing underwriting function. This is an opportunity to join a technology-forward organization that is modernizing the mortgage process and building a scalable lending platform.

The ideal candidate is an experienced mortgage underwriting leader who combines strong credit and underwriting expertise with people leadership, operational discipline, and a continuous-improvement mindset.

You will oversee day-to-day underwriting operations, support complex or escalated loans, coach and develop underwriters, and partner closely with operations, sales, closing, and product/technology teams to improve quality, speed, and consistency throughout the lending process.

What You'll Do

• Lead and manage a team of mortgage underwriters, providing coaching, mentorship, feedback, and performance management


• Oversee daily underwriting production and ensure loans move efficiently through the pipeline


• Review and support escalated or complex loan scenarios and provide guidance on credit and underwriting decisions


• Ensure underwriting decisions are consistent with applicable agency, investor, regulatory, and company guidelines


• Monitor underwriting quality, productivity, turn times, and other key performance metrics


• Identify bottlenecks and opportunities to improve underwriting workflows, processes, and controls


• Develop and maintain underwriting procedures, guidelines, and SOPs


• Partner closely with processing, closing, post-closing, sales, and operations leadership to resolve issues and keep loans moving


• Work cross-functionally with product and technology teams to identify opportunities for automation and workflow improvements


• Help build scalable underwriting processes as the company grows


• Stay current on changes to agency, investor, regulatory, and credit guidelines


• Promote a culture of accountability, accuracy, collaboration, and continuous improvement

What We're Looking For

• 7+ years of mortgage underwriting experience, with meaningful experience in a senior or leadership capacity


• Prior experience managing, mentoring, or leading mortgage underwriters


• Strong knowledge of residential mortgage underwriting and credit guidelines


• Experience with conventional, FHA, VA, and/or other relevant loan products


• Strong understanding of income, assets, credit, liabilities, DTI, LTV/CLTV, appraisal, and overall credit risk assessment


• Experience handling complex files, exceptions, and escalations


• Strong knowledge of agency and investor requirements


• Proven ability to manage underwriting pipelines while maintaining high quality and compliance standards


• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills


• Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills


• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment


• A process-improvement mindset with the ability to identify opportunities to make underwriting more efficient and scalable

Nice to Have

• Experience in a fintech, mortgage technology, or high-growth lending environment


• Experience building or scaling an underwriting team


• Experience developing underwriting SOPs, policies, or quality-control processes


• Encompass or other mortgage LOS experience


• Experience partnering with product, engineering, or operations teams on workflow automation


• Experience working with non-QM or other specialized lending products
