This project aims to evaluate zwitterionic polymer membranes with ionchannel-
like behavior to selectively recover lithium (Li+) from industrial
wastewater while resisting fouling over long-term operation. Zwitterionic
materials have gained significant interest in separation applications,
including pressure-driven membrane technology, due to their strong
hydration and antifouling properties. However, there is still a knowledge
gap in understanding the structure- property relationships that govern ionselectivity
and long-term performance in environments prone to fouling. By
tailoring the chemical structure of the cationic moieties within the
zwitterionic framework, this project aims to understand how molecular
variations influence membrane hydration, ion transport, and fouling.
Overall, this project will advance separation science by investigating bioinspired,
non-thermal mechanisms for selective ion transport, examining
how membrane properties influence selectivity and characterizing temporal
changes in membrane behavior - all within the context of critical materials
recovery from unconventional feed streams.
