The research aide will participate in on site experimental research on antiferromagnetic thin films and hybrid microwave devices based on KMnF₃, NiO, and antiferromagnetic metallic multilayers to study magnetization dynamics and spin wave propagation in these systems. Under supervision, the research aide will assist with sample preparation, RF and microwave structure design, lithographic patterning, thin film processing, and experimental characterization. The research aide will help characterize crystallographic, magnetic, transport, and high frequency properties using techniques such as X-ray diffraction, SQUID magnetometry, broadband ferromagnetic resonance, microwave measurements, and related laboratory methods. The position will also involve quantitative data analysis, preparation of figures, documentation of experimental procedures, and presentation of results in group meetings. This appointment will provide hands on training in antiferromagnetic materials, nanofabrication, magnetic characterization, microwave device concepts, and experimental methods relevant to magnonics, spin dynamics, and quantum materials research.
Education and Experience Requirements
The successful candidate should have a background in physics, materials science, electrical engineering, applied physics, or a related field, with interest in magnetism, spin dynamics, superconductivity, quantum materials, or nanoscale devices. Experience with thin film deposition, nanofabrication, cryogenic measurements, microwave measurements, transport characterization, magnetic characterization, or magnetic materials is highly desirable. Familiarity with antiferromagnetic materials, spin wave propagation, magnetization dynamics, superconducting resonators, RF and microwave structure design, broadband ferromagnetic resonance measurements, SQUID magnetometry, or high frequency device measurements would be an advantage. Desired technical skills include Python programming for data analysis and instrument control, CAD drawing, OriginLab, Microsoft Office, optical lithography, electron beam lithography, high vacuum and ultra high vacuum techniques, electron beam evaporation, thermal evaporation, sputtering, and X ray diffraction analysis. Prior experience with all listed techniques is not required, but the candidate should have strong experimental aptitude, attention to detail, willingness to learn new laboratory methods, ability to work both independently and collaboratively, good written and oral communication skills, and motivation to contribute to research at the intersection of magnonics, quantum engineering, and materials science.
• The entirety of the appointment must be conducted within the United States.
• Applicants must be:
o Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution.
o Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months; or
o Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution.
• Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins.
• Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
• If accepting an offer, candidates may be required to complete pre-employment drug testing based on appointment length. All students remain subject to
applicable drug testing policies.
• Must complete a satisfactory background check.
