Job Description - Research Engineer (X-Ray Optics Laboratory)

Title:

Research Engineer (X-Ray Optics Laboratory)

BELONG. CONNECT. GROW. with KBR.

Around here, we define the future. We are a company of innovators, thinkers, creators, explorers, volunteers, and dreamers. But we all share one goal: to improve the world responsibly and safely.

Research Engineer (X-Ray Optics Laboratory)

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), nestled in the Maryland suburbs of Greenbelt is located just 30 minutes from the heartbeat of America - Washington, D.C.  We at KBR are proud to be a member of this unique team, and now, so can you. Come join KBR and reach for the stars at NASA.  We are seeking a Research Engineer candidate to serve as a member of a KBR team working on the Space and Earth Science Data Analysis (SESDA-V) program in the Next Generations X-Ray Optics (NGXO) group, working full-time from NASA/GSFC in Greenbelt, MD, with the potential flexibility for hybrid work, at the discretion of the NASA customer.

The Research Engineer supports NASA’s NGXO team by designing, prototyping, testing, and refining precision opto-mechanical systems. The role involves CAD modeling, applying GD&T, supporting manufacturing processes, and using metrology tools for validation, while collaborating with engineers and scientists in a multidisciplinary, research-driven environment.

The ideal candidate for this position would be a self-starter, self-motivator and an original thinker that has the capabilities to work directly with team members, other engineers and supporting scientists to design prototyping testing, and re-designing structures for the NGXO group, as part of the research project.  The Research Engineer will perform other duties and assignments as required.

Minimum Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Proficiency with CAD (3D modeling, assemblies, surfacing/geometry) and creating production-ready drawings.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T applied to parts and assemblies for inspection and fit/function.
  • Experience with metrology tools and practices (calipers, micrometers, CMM/optical measurement, alignment/verification).
  • Practical experience with subtractive (machining, fixturing, tolerances) and additive (3D printing workflows, materials, post-processing) manufacturing.
  • Basic programming/scripting ability (e.g., Python, MATLAB, Bash, or similar).
  • Exposure to automation concepts (test setups, control/DAQ, repeatable procedures).
  • Strong written, verbal, and graphical communication skills; ability to document work clearly.
  • Ability to work effectively on a diverse, multidisciplinary team.
  • Self-starter: organized, self-motivated, takes pride in quality work, and eager to learn new domains quickly.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or similar embedded platforms.
  • Experience integrating sensors, basic electronics, and data acquisition.
  • Familiarity with motion systems (stages, actuators, encoders) and mechatronics.
  • Familiarity with lasers, optics, and precision opto-mechanical hardware (handling, alignment, safety).
  • Experience with engineering analysis tools (FEA — basic or advanced).
  • Background in materials science.
  • Spaceflight hardware experience (dynamics, materials selection, vacuum compatibility, thermal cycling, coatings, etc.).

US Citizenship or Permanent Residency Required

Experience and/or education in lieu of these qualifications may be considered.

Basic Compensation:

$94,000.00 – $172,200.00

The offered rate will be based on contract affordability and the selected candidate's working location, knowledge, skills, and/or experience and in consideration of internal parity.
