Job Description
The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine seeks a full-time Scientist with specific expertise in the fields of immunology and computational biology. Divisional areas of research interest include immune dysregulation, age-specific differences in immune function, sepsis phenotypes, organ dysfunction, and predictive analytics during critical illness. We are searching for an individual who is drawn to the broad research opportunities at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, with its collaborative clinical programs at Northwestern Memorial and Lurie Children’s Hospitals. General responsibilities will include working as part of a dynamic team of clinical and research faculty and staff. The successful candidate is expected to develop a record of outstanding collaborative research and contribute to the Department of Pediatrics’ mission of scholarly activities and excellence.
Qualified candidates must have a PhD with an outstanding record of research in the fields of computational biology and immunology. Qualified candidates must also possess a history of rigorous scientific training in the fields of basic and translational research as well as bioinformatics as it relates to medicine/health. Candidates with prior experience in the handling, processing, and utilization of human biospecimens (blood, tissue, respiratory secretions, etc.) for scientific research are also of particular interest.
Directs and manages the research and quality improvement (QI) operations, internal and external grant funding, research education, and regulatory compliance. Progressively and proactively develops, plans, and builds the team’s capacity to provide excellent QI and research support to clinical research operations and strategic decision making. In addition, the research scientist will oversee and implement QI and research projects, participating fully in the design, analysis, and presentation of the findings and supervising staff.
Job Responsibilities:
Provide key leadership in directing and managing the scientific, administrative, and fiscal aspects of the clinical research and quality improvement program; oversee all research and QI projects.

Serve as an advisor to other hospital research programs regarding programmatic infrastructure building for clinical research and QI programs.

Maintains knowledge of relevant scientific literature and technical resources to provide consultative, educational, technical and informational services as needed to staff and faculty.

Collaborate with all clinicians, guiding research and QI design, database development and staff recruitment decisions.

Supervise research and QI staff, mentor and train medical students, residents, and fellows.

Develop studies in partnership with clinician investigators; direct the design of research and QI projects, creation of data collection and data entry systems.

Analyze quantitative and qualitative data, write research and QI protocols, abstracts, presentations, manuscripts, and grants.

Builds scientific knowledge by reading relevant articles and attending seminars.

Perform resident and fellow teaching at didactic conferences in reference to QI and research.

Present findings in a wide range of academic, hospital, partner, and community venues, as appropriate.

Help identify and pursue grant opportunities that may be used to expand the capacity of the research team.

Manage all internal and external grant funding related to clinical research and QI.

Assure compliance with all regulations regarding the use and release of data (HIPAA and IRB).

Plan, guide, and administer a broad portfolio of internally and externally funded projects within the division.

Collaborate with researchers within the division to secure external research funding through grants and contracts to support research initiatives.

Publish scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals and present research findings at national and international conferences.

Develop and articulate goals and objectives to achieve the division’s overall goals of improving patient care and conducting high impact research.

Engage with individuals across Northwestern University and at external institutions to identify research gaps and opportunities, develop collaborative research and operational initiatives, and grow the diversity and capacity of the division’s research workforce.

Mentor residents, fellows, and colleagues in basic/translational research projects and computational biology.

Other job functions as assigned.

Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in public health or related field, Ph.D. preferred.

Seven (7) plus years of experience with a wide range of research methodologies, statistical procedures, and progressively more complex analytic methodologies.

Four (4) plus years of experience working with complex data systems, either administrative data or data collected for research or public health purposes.

Demonstrated effective leadership capabilities.

Excellent written, verbal and presentation communication skills.

Ability to display complex data analyses in an easy-to-understand manner.

Ability to facilitate complex conversations with multiple stakeholders to define and carry out analytic projects effectively.
