Desired Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college with a major in Civil or Construction Engineering.

  • Registration as a Civil Engineer by the State of California (required).

  • Familiarity with, and a working knowledge of the Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction (Greenbook) and the Standard Plans for Public Works Construction, and experience in their use.

  • Working knowledge of the Caltrans Standard Specifications, Standard Plans, and Standard Special Provisions, and experience in their use.

  • Working knowledge of the Cal/OSHA Construction Safety Orders.

  • Ability to interpret plans, specifications, special provisions, and other contract documents.

  • Familiarity with contract administration requirements contained in the Caltrans Local Assistance Procedures Manual (LAPM).

  • Graduation from the Caltrans Resident Engineer Academy or documented experience as the Resident Engineer on at least three major road, bridge, or dam construction projects.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.

  • Ability to independently identify problems and propose solutions.

  •  Previous experience on at least three bridge construction, bridge widening, bridge seismic retrofit, major storm drain, or major roadway reconstruction projects (required).

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Under the oversight and direction of Public Works' Section Heads and Field Area Supervisors, Resident Engineers will be assigned to individual projects. These projects may involve bridge construction, rehabilitation, widening, or seismic retrofit; dam rehabilitation; storm drain or sewage pump plant construction or rehabilitation; major road reconstruction; construction of major storm drain systems; or other types of public work projects.

  • Perform construction inspection, oversight, enforcement of compliance with the contract documents, and on-site management of the construction of the types of projects described above.

  • Prepare and process change orders, daily logs, and workday statements; collect work records; maintain accurate records of work done for payment purposes; conduct employee interviews; prepare as-built plans; and perform other associated contract administration tasks.

  • Arrange for materials testing and construction staking to be performed by Public Works' staff.

  • Respond to inquiries from the public, elected officials, other agencies, Project Management Division III staff, and other affected Public Works Divisions.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Project Management Division III and the Public Works staff.




Compensation: $140,000.00 per year
