Resident Veterinarian - Surgery

The Surgical Residency program at The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center is a 3-year, comprehensive training experience with direct guidance in the surgical management of diseases. A very active and varied caseload is one of the prime attractions of this residency program. This feature allows residents to perform many difficult and complicated procedures repeatedly so that experience and confidence increases along with knowledge and exposure. The surgery department also has brand new, state of the art operating rooms and equipment. Residents work alongside colleagues in nearly all specialties, fostering a collaborative environment for patient care and research opportunities.

What are the details?To qualify for a license as a veterinarian, an applicant shall fulfill the following requirements:Application: file an application with the department;Education: have received an education, including a doctoral degree in veterinary medicine, in accordance with thecommissioner's regulations;Experience: have experience satisfactory to the board and in accordance with the commissioner's regulations;Examination: pass an examination satisfactory to the board and in accordance with the commissioner'sregulations;Age: be at least twenty-one years of age;Citizenship or immigration status: be a United States citizen or an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residencein the United States; provided, however that the board of regents may grant a one-time three-year waiver for aveterinarian who otherwise meets the requirements of this article and who has accepted an offer to practiceveterinary medicine in a county in the state which the department has certified as having a shortage of qualifiedapplicants to fill existing vacancies in veterinary medicine, and provided further that the board of regents maygrant an extension of such three-year waiver of not more than one year;Character: be of good moral character as determined by the department; andFees: pay a fee of two hundred sixty dollars to the department for admission to a department conductedexamination and for an initial license, a fee of one hundred thirty-five dollars for each reexamination, a fee of onehundred thirty dollars for an initial license for persons not requiring admission to a department conductedexamination, and a fee of two hundred ten dollars for each triennial registration period.

Salary Details

• 2nd year 57,500.00


• 3rd year 60,000


• Compensation increases if the subsidized housing option is utilized by applicantfrom $55,000 to $71,000-$73,00 a year.


• Under IRS rules and regulations any subsidized housing being offered by anemployer to an employee is considered a fringe benefit and is therefore subject toincome taxes. In this case, the difference between the fair market rental value ofan apartment and the actual subsidized rent that the employee pays is imputedincome and will be reflected on your year-end W-2. For example: the fair marketrental value of an apartment space is $2,648.00 per month and the employee pays$1,175.00 per month then there is a taxable fringe benefit deemed to be worth$1,473.00 per month. This will be reflected in your W-2 as an additional $17,676.00in taxable income ($1,473.00 x 12 months = $17,676.00).
