Job Description - Resiliency Officer

Resiliency Officer

The Resiliency Officer is a prevention and resource officer that is responsible for the coordination and provision of resources to vulnerable citizens, including victims, survivors, offenders, and those prone to being victimized and becoming offenders.

The Resiliency Officer is a sworn full-time law enforcement position that is a non-uniformed deputy. The King and Queen County Sheriff’s Office will provide the Resiliency Officer with a take-home vehicle, and the Officer must follow the vehicle take-home car policy.

The Resiliency Officers' position is a concept based on the fact that rural localities like King and Queen County don’t have resources readily available for victims, offenders, and people at risk. Essentially, we are setting them up for failure by only being reactive and not proactive. This position will be ever-changing and adapting to meet the needs and provide resources to citizens. After law enforcement leaves a call due to a lack of probable cause to arrest, the Resilience Officer will come in and offer resources, including counseling, anger management, and domestic violence support. Many vital Resource Providers will not provide services in the home without a deputy escort. This officer will do escorts to bring resources into the homes of those in need.

Minimum Requirements

  • · Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License.

  • Must have completed high school or have the equivalent of a high diploma.

  •  1 year of law enforcement experience or a BS or BA degree.

  •  This position requires Law Enforcement certification.

  • Requires Court Security and Civil Process certifications.

  • Must obtain Certification in Crime Scene Investigation within 2 years of employment with the Sheriff's Office.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide resources to victims of gun violence in the field.

  • Work collaboratively with the Victim Witness Coordinator.

  • Establish contacts and relationships with prevention agencies as assigned by    the Sheriff.

  • Establish contacts and relationships with rehabilitative agencies as assigned by the Sheriff.

  • Work closely with local and state Probation Officers and Prisoner Reentry agencies.

  • On-call assignment to respond will be based on the need in the county as determined by the Sheriff.

  • Response to homes to follow up on resources and to escort resource personnel.

  • Transport of victims during a crisis and to identified resources as needed.

  • Serve as a member of the Critical Incident Stress Management Team.

  • Will be trained as a Crisis Intervention Team Member and Instructor.

  •  Compile statistical data to demonstrate the program's success and to set goals and demonstrate progress towards meeting the goals. Must be able to create a continuity of improvement and building upon the goals.

  • Create programs, policies, and procedures to support the mission and goals.

  • Successful completion of Crime Prevention Specialist and Certified Crime Prevention Community programs.

The position of Resiliency officer is inherently a high-stress and physically demanding position. All sworn staff must complete a basic course and maintain skills and physical fitness. The King & Queen County Sheriff’s Office requires a fit-for-duty exam to be completed prior to hiring.

Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Sit or stand for long periods of time for four (4) up to eight (8) hours daily.

  •  Manage a high level of stress for eight (8) up to twelve (12) hours daily.

  •  Bend, reach, climb, and run is often a function completed daily.

  •  Lift 0-25 pounds on a daily basis, lift 25-30 pounds often, and lift 50+ pounds occasionally.

  • Ability to perform data entry and clerical work for four (4) up to eight (8) hours daily.

  •  Manage the inherent danger of the potential daily risks during arrests using        necessary and reasonable force to take someone into custody.
