Description

The Respiratory Therapist III is an advanced Respiratory Therapist who has been trained and is independently functional in general ward therapy RT procedures, adult ventilator management, and adult care "specialty functions" that have been adjudged appropriate to shift need and approved by the Director of the Division of Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine. Respiratory Care Service "specialty functions" include: Management of Pediatric-Neonatal Ventilators and related adjuncts, Performance of Arterial Punctures for Blood gas Analysis; Performance of Bronchoscopy Assist RT procedures; Performance of Emergency Department RT procedures. An Advanced Respiratory Therapist is expected to function as assigned in the subspecialty areas in which he/she has been trained and adjudged functionally competent.



Responsibilities

  • Performs Adult and Pediatric general ward therapy RT procedures including set-up and monitoring of: free flow O2 therapy systems, bland aerosol systems; medicinal aerosol systems; volume expansion techniques/ devices; bronchial hygiene techniques/ devices; CPR.

  • Management of Adult Ventilator Systems including setup and monitoring of: continuous invasive and non invasive mechanical ventilator systems, specialty gases and related monitoring and supportive adjuncts used on adult patient populations.

  • Performs Emergency Department RT procedures including set-up and monitoring of adult invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilator systems and related supportive adjuncts; adult arterial puncture for bloodgas analysis; adult and pediatric general ward therapy RT procedures.

  • Performs adult Arterial Punctures for Bloodgas Analysis per approved policy & procedure and as appropriate to shift need.

  • Performs Bronchoscopy Assist RT procedures per approved service section protocols and as appropriate to shift need.

  • Operates the Respiratory Therapy Section computerized order entry and dispatch system per approved protocol and as appropriate to shift need.

  • Obtaining & interpretation of ABG

  • Ability to work independently in the emergency departments

  • Ability to manage patient care workload in critical care & non critical care areas

  • Set up and troubleshoot nitric oxide delivery systems

  • Perform bedside and/or full bronchoscopy assist

  • Proficient in working in specialty units including PICU,NICU and or Blood gas lab

  • Participate in both ground or air transport of pediatric or neonatal patients that needs to be transported to or from Cedar Sinai for higher level of care**

  • Set up, administer and troubleshoot inhaled vasodilator agents

  • May actively participate in preceptorship responsibilities

  • Observation, guidance and peer evaluation of new employees, RT students as assigned and as related to ward therapy procedures and adult ventilator management procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned



Qualifications

Education



  • Assoc. Degree/College Diploma Associates Degree in Respiratory Therapy or similar - minimum

  • Bachelor's Degree Bachelors Degree in Respiratory Therapy or other fields - preferred

  • Master's Degree Master’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy or other fields - preferred




Experience



  • 5 years Respirtory Therapist with acute care experience, Trained and independently functional in all shift-specific, adult care subspecialty patient services offered by the CSMC Respiratory Care Service. - minimum

  • 5 years Internal candidates must have an overall performance rating of “Meets” or higher on their last performance review - minimum




Licenses and Certifications



  • RCP State License - Upon Hire minimum Must be currently licensed by the State of California as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP.)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Upon Hire minimum Current BLS certification.

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - Upon Hire minimum Current PALS required to work in the Emergency Department.

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS/ALS) - Upon Hire minimum Current ACLS certification current & valid at all times

  • Registered Resp Therapist - Upon Hire minimum CRT or RRT current & valid at all times

  • Other - Upon Hire minimum Other competencies, as required by specialty area (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
