Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapy Director supervises the overall operation of the department. This position ensures the implementation of all hospital and department Respiratory Therapy policies and procedures. Directly responsible to the Executive Director of Ancillary Services and acts as a liaison between the administration, medical director, other departments and other respiratory staff members.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accomplishes respiratory therapy services by determining accountabilities; communicating and enforcing values, policies, and procedures; implementing recruitment, selection, orientation, training, coaching, counseling, disciplinary, and communication programs; planning, monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions; planning and reviewing compensation strategies.
  • Develops respiratory therapy services organizational strategies by contributing information, analysis, and recommendations to strategic thinking and direction; establishing functional objectives in line with organizational objectives.
  • Establishes respiratory therapy services operational strategies by evaluating trends; establishing critical measurements; determining production, productivity, quality, and customer-service strategies; designing systems; accumulating resources; resolving problems; implementing change.
  • Develops respiratory therapy services financial strategies by estimating, forecasting, and anticipating requirements, trends, and variances; aligning monetary resources; developing action plans; measuring and analyzing results; initiating corrective actions; minimizing the impact of variances.
  • Prepares hospital and nursing personnel by providing workshops on critical care medicine; observing participants' performance; developing hospital and nursing orientation to respiratory care.
  • Prepares respiratory therapy students for job responsibilities by providing educational opportunities; coordinating clinical rotations; observing student intern performance; recommending additional reading and practical learning opportunities.
  • Completes clinical research on respiratory modalities in critical and non-critical care areas by monitoring protocols; helping staff evaluate protocols; analyzing results.
  • Completes internal/external projects by serving on medical staff committees; serving on task force groups and committees; identifying and implementing new technology and resources; redesigning systems; re-deploying respiratory resources.
  • Maintains legal and accreditation compliance by developing policy positions concerning federal, state, and local regulations, DNV and ACHC standards, anticipating emerging issues.
  • Updates respiratory therapy job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Enhances respiratory therapy services and hospital reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Directly supervises employees in the Respiratory Therapy. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Responsible for budgeting/accounting for the RT department.
  • Responsible for purchasing and supply inventory with the RT department.
  • Determine standard fees for procedures and supplies
  • Keeps policies and procedures current, reviews and approves as necessary.
  • Respond to problems/opportunities to improve care/customer service.
  • Oversees all aspects of PFT, Cardiac Stress test, Ambulatory Cardiac Monitoring, and Home Sleep Studies.
  • Actively engage in quality improvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in health related field
  • Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) in Idaho
  • 3-5 Years’ experience as a Respiratory Therapist
  • ACLS and BLS certifications
  • NBRC RRT Certified

Preferred Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in health related field
  • Critical Care/ICU experience preferred
  • Previous supervisory or management experience

  • Basic computer skills/knowledge

  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, with the ability to balance purchasing, housekeeping and maintenance needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and listening ability.
  • A strong ability to be adaptable and flexible.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work with teams and lead decision-making processes in a team environment.
  • Highly motivated, results oriented, driven.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with coworkers, managers, supervisors and administration.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to written or oral instructions.  
  • Ability to maintain proper levels of confidentiality.
  • Obtaining and seeing to the appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to do certain work.
  • SDS or RSPGT certifications
  • STABLE, NRP, PALS certifications
  • Intubation experience

Physical Requirements

Perceive the nature of sounds by the ear, express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word, perceive characteristics of objects through the eyes, extend arms and hands in any direction, seize, hold, grasp, turn, or otherwise work with hands, pick, pinch, or otherwise work with fingers, perceive such attributes of objects or materials as size, shape, temperature, or texture; and stoop, kneel crouch, and crawl. Must be able to lift 25 pounds maximum with frequent lifting, carrying pushing, and pulling of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Continuous walking and standing. Must be able to identify, match, and distinguish colors.
