The Acute Care Nursing Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of all areas of the nursing departments. He/She is responsible for staff assignments, intradepartmental or inter-departmental problem solving. He/She must organize, implement, and evaluate patient care activities. He/She plays a major role in the development of staff through teaching, coaching, and counseling on a group or individual basis. He/She participates in the development, interpretation, and enforcement of policies and procedures. The Acute Care Nursing Supervisor will assess the quality of patient care given and will direct and coordinate the activities of professional and nonprofessional nursing personnel in giving quality care.
SPESIFICATIONS
Assists with the development and maintenance of departmental policy and procedures.
Knows and follows the chain of command.
Can handle sensitive information regarding patient and hospital business. Follows established hospital policies and procedures to preserve the patients right to privacy and confidentiality.
Responsible for staffing assignments for ED, OB, and the AC department. Able to coordinate the staffing resources to provide optimal patient care. Assigns a code team at the beginning of each shift.
Plays a major role in the development of staff through teaching, coaching, and counseling.
Contributes to the budget plan for efficient use and control of financial resources within the department, including staff, supplies, and equipment.
Knows how to implement the disaster plan in an emergency situation.
Maintains open communication within the departments and refers concerns or events to the appropriate managers of administration.
Evaluates and supervises the activities of professional and non-professional nursing personnel in terms of job performance. Will assess the quality of care given for probationary and yearly evaluations.
Demonstrates commitment to being a leader and role model.
Communicates appropriately with the press, public, and law-enforcement.
Signs off daily overtime of staff. Records low census, SB etc., in appropriate place on the schedule.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
-Giving medications following procedure
-Blood Transfusions
-IV Meds
-IV Fluids
-Starting IV’s
-Special treatments (i.e. respiratory, dressing changes, ect)
-Providing bedside nursing care
-Serving trays
-Answering lights and telephones
-Admitting, transferring and discharging patients
-Maintaining supplies and equipment
-Appropriate patient teaching concerning routine hospital procedures and
special procedures regarding their condition
-Being familiar with basic cardiac rhythms, emergency drugs and equipment
-Complete charting each shift
-Performing or appropriately delegating ADL’s for patient
-Assisting physician with procedures such as chest tube placement,
paracentesis thoracentesis, suturing of wounds etc.
-Understands basics of post-partum and nursery care
-Does appropriate discharge teaching including activity instructions,
medication instructions, among others
-Accurate documentation
-Knowledge of procedures of handling the deceased
-Understands and is able to explain advanced directives to patients when

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
2. Attends and participates in meetings and is responsible for information communicated at meetings.
3. Assists all patients, family members, physicians, visitors, and employees in a professional and courteous manner.
4. Follows Infection Control procedures at all times.
5. Adheres to the following environmental care standards.
6. Be familiar with the collective bargaining agreement of the USNU and Mid-Valley Hospital.
7. Demonstrates the ability to adapt to varied age-specific patient populations.
EDUCATION:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Washington.
EXPERIENCE:
Three to five years of nursing experience in an acute care setting. Holds Current ACLS, and within one year obtains their TNCC, PALS, and Neonatal Resuscitation certifications.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE/REGISTRATION:
Current state nursing licensure.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively: delegate and coordinate through leadership skills.
Ability to communicate with people of diverse backgrounds and educational levels; i.e. patients, families, employees, physicians, etc.
CAREER PATH:
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Gloves, gown, and eye protection.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
May be required to work any shift in emergencies.
May be required to work any day of the week.
This position is primarily sedentary in nature. Maximum amount of lifting is 10-lbs. frequent carrying of objects up to 20 lbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This person spends 95% of their time in temperature controlled office space. The potential for exposure to biohazardous agents or exposure to blood-borne pathogens and other potential infectious agents is minimal to none. This position requires contact with patients and staff under a wide variety of circumstances. This person is subject to varying and unpredictable situations, many interruptions, long irregular hours, multiple calls and inquires, night meetings, and travel.
WAGE AND COMPENSATION
Wage range $ 39.14 hr. - $70.87 hr. plus 7% ADDITIONAL CHARGE PAY – DOE
Mid-Valley Hospital offers a benefit package. This includes accrued vacation time in the amount of .076923 vacation hours per hour worked. Accrued sick leave at an accrual of .04615 per hour, Life insurance and a profit-sharing plan. We also offer medical, dental and vision insurance plans.
